Working in a bakery can be an adventure. One thing's for sure: it's NOT easy. Here's a list of things you know to be true if you've ever worked in one of these fine establishments.
1. People ask for custom cakes at the last minute.
“If I order a cake now, can I pick it up this afternoon?” No. No. No, no. NO. NO! Sorry, we aren’t wizards. We can’t wave a magic wand and make your cake of procrastination.2. Speaking of which, some of these cake orders are downright ridiculous.
“Can I get that cake in the shape of an octopus?” Yeah, ma’am. Would you like to carve that shape for us? No? Then don’t ask. “Oh, can my cake be a nice shade of chartreuse?” I beg your pardon, what?
3. Not everything is made from scratch.
Sorry, guys. Everyone is all about convenience these days, so some things come in frozen. My family hates when I bring this up. My dad even covers his ears.
4. Some people complain about the prices.
So, you’re not willing to pay $20 for a sheet cake that feeds 15 to 18 people? Okay. Go to the “fancier” bakeries that will charge you twice the amount. Or, better yet, go buy a box of cake mix and a can of frosting. Only $3!
5. You have to work during some major holidays.
It sucks. It really does. Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Easter, you name it. It also makes you wonder who the heck is out shopping on Thanksgiving. I mean, come on!6. You get to eat some of the sweets.
This is obviously the biggest perk of the job. You have no idea how giddy we get when a package of cupcakes becomes damaged and we can't put it on the sales floor. We can't let it go to waste, can we?7. The cleaning can be tedious.
The icing on the tables, sticky bun smear on the floor, breadcrumbs in every nook and cranny… it’s a nightmare. Some bakeries are so busy, they can’t even keep up with the cleaning procedures, and it’s a disaster.8. You find yourself more patient with other foodservice employees because you know how it is.
You've experienced first hand what it's like to have an impatient customer. Don't be one! You know the struggle, so don't be the struggle.
