The Business major, being one of the most commonly pursued majors and careers, yields an extremely competitive field. That atmosphere can be somewhat discouraging at times, which is why I have asked Santiago Aparicio, an rising junior at Florida State University studying finance, how he deals with the cutthroat business world.
Aparicio says, “The best thing you can do is figure out what makes you stand out from other job candidates. What are your unique qualities that make you different from everyone else? The more distinct you make yourself out to be, the more they will want you.” If you do not know what your unique skill is don’t worry, but perhaps start thinking about! Are you hardworking and driven? Are you good at accounting? Where have you previously interned? These are skills and experiences that can make you stand out from other potential job candidates, thus why Aparicio also highly recommends to start interning and networking with companies as soon as possible. “I don’t think I can stress that enough. The more experience you have on your resume the better, and I definitely wish I started earlier.” This advice may seem like something from a broken record, but it’s the hard cold truth of the business world!
Although Aparicio may wish he started interning earlier, he is doing pretty well for himself. He is currently interning at Strategic Wealth Group of North Florida Financial, a wealth management firm in Tallahassee. His role is to be the right-hand man of the financial advisor, and some of his daily tasks include assisting in helping clients meet their long-term growth and sustainability goals, and design future cash flow projections, risk coverage comparisons, and portfolio performance analysis to present during client meetings.
On the other hand, besides interning one of the most beneficial things that Aparicio has done at FSU was he got involved with clubs and organizations, such as Noles on Wall Street that are helping him meet his career goals. “I definitely recommend it!” says Aparicio. This is a mentorship and networking program that helps place College of Business students in highly sought after internships and full-time positions. “They help you with interview prep, technical skills, and provides events that you can attend to increase your network. It’s a great program!"
However, the business world will always be cutthroat, but at the end of the day how much effort you put into your career is how much success you are going to receive. “So just keep grinding!”
