Christmas is supposed to be the best time of the year; where everyone is happy and people become a better version of themselves. However, it seems like most people think Christmas is all about the presents and showing people how much you love them by the size of the gifts you give them. The true meaning and spirit of Christmas got lost in translation somewhere along the way, and it’s not such a happy time anymore. Instead, it’s all about competing with one another. This Christmas, all I want is for people to think differently about that and do something to make a difference in someone’s life.
Christmas morning, all we’ll be seeing on social media are pictures of people’s Christmas trees with all their gifts wrapped around it. For most people, the underlying reason they post these pictures is to show off how many presents they got, and they want to prove to people that they get so much for Christmas. People will get new phones, computers and overpriced shoes or clothes. They’ll get 20 big gifts and claim it’s not enough. There are plenty more important things than the gifts that are given on Christmas.
Believe it or not, some people would be happy to get one small present, just one. Even more mind boggling, some people would be happier to see their whole family together on Christmas instead of getting any presents at all. While most people are wishing they got so many more things off their lists, some people are just wishing for another healthy day. Don’t forget, someone always has it worse.
This Christmas, I hope to see things change. Instead of sitting around feeling sorry for themselves, I wish people would help someone else. Even more so, I wish people did this while expecting nothing in return. Go to a soup kitchen, donate toys to kids in need, wish your lonely neighbor a Merry Christmas and bake them something delicious. Spread the kindness we need to see more of in this world. To some people, that means more than anything in the world. Many things you can do to make someone’s holiday cost little to nothing.
I’m not saying that everyone acts this way at Christmas time, but truth be told a lot more people do than they should. There’s nothing I love more than hearing all the good and heartwarming stories about how someone’s Christmas was made by a small gesture of kindness. These are the kinds of things we should be hearing about, not about all the new electronics you can buy for your whole family. Bring back the real spirit of Christmas, the one that makes everyone feel good.
One day, I hope we can go back to showing the true meaning of Christmas around the holidays. The Christmas where everyone is happy for everyone else instead of envying them for what they have. The Christmas where people volunteered instead of bringing people down. All it takes is a few people to change everyone’s perspective about the holiday season, be that person. Do something good. You’ll never forget the feeling it gives these people, and yourself.
