Almost as talked about as the inauguration last week, was the Women’s March on Washington in Washington D.C.. The march took place on Saturday, just one day after Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States. The event was organized after an election season filled with harmful rhetoric towards people of color, immigrants, and women. More specifically, the march was planned after Donald Trump was elected in spite of the audio footage that was released of him speaking casually about sexually assaulting women. For many women, this march was an opportunity to fight back against this harmful sexism and have their voices heard.
The march was first conceptualized shortly after election night. It was Teresa Shook from Hawaii who made a Facebook event about the march shortly after Donald Trump was announced as the President-elect. By the next morning, the event had already received 10,000 RSVPs and the number was growing. She was later joined in her efforts by Bob Bland, who had been able to raise over $20,000 for Planned Parenthood through Anti-Trump T-shirt sales. The two of them then teamed up with Carmen Perez, Tamika Mallory, and Linda Sarsour. Sarsour had a particular interest in the event, not just as a woman, but also as Arab-American who is the executive director for The Arab-American Association of New York. Mallory is also an activist in her right, as she is a advocate for gun-control and civil rights - two issues that took major precedent during the election.
Celebrities joined the March’s efforts such as Chrissy Teigen, Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera, Amy Schumer, Zendaya, and many more. What started as a March on Washington - an homage to Martin Luther King’s famous March on Washington - grew beyond what it was first expected to be. The March stretched into cities all over the world, with marches occurring in nearly every state as well as some foreign countries. While the marches cannot change the outcomes of the election, they have proven that one thing is for sure: women are a force to be reckoned with and they will not back down so easily.
