After taking action and spreading the word about a man who they saw drop an unknown substance into his friend’s drink, three California women are being credited for preventing a potential sexual assault.
Sonia Ulrich, Marla Saltzer and Monica Kenyon were at Fig, a restaurant located in the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, for happy hour when they spotted a man and a woman at a nearby table. When the woman left to go to the restroom, the man started to act strange. His suspicious behavior caught the attention of one of the three women, who witnessed the man slip something into his friend's drink while she was gone.
The women recognized that something needed to be done, so they took action. Kenyon followed the woman to the bathroom and told her what they believe they had just witnessed. The woman revealed to Kenyon that the man is (and probably now, was) one of her best friends.
Another one of the three alerted the restaurant’s staff and manager. The security footage was viewed and appeared to support their suspicions, so the manager called the police.
The 25-year-old suspect, Michael Hsu, was arrested and is now being held by a $1 million bail. According to ABC News, Hsu faces two felony counts of intent to commit a felony and intent to use a drug to commit a felony.
Ulrich shared their story on Facebook along with a photo of the three women posing like “Charlie’s Angels” that is captioned “Don’t roofie someone on our watch!”
Despite the playfulness of the image, Ulrich emphasizes that this is no joking matter. According to her post, they created the image to get people's attention and to encourage other witnesses to act and say something, "even if it's awkward or weird or just uncertain if anything can be done."
How can we be more proactive like these women in our everyday lives? We can have the courage to speak up when we witness these events. We can acknowledge that if we say something, it can make all the difference. Instead of being bystanders, we can get involved. Even if it's as simple as telling another person who has the courage to take action, saying something can change someone's life for the better.
