Yes, I Still Need Feminism Because We Still Have Work To Do

Feminism is not about hating men.

It is not about being better than men, and it is not about putting them down. It is not about me not being satisfied by what we've accomplished in our county.

It's about me wanting to be seen as equal to everyone in America. It's about me wanting to help other women around the world feel empowered and gain the respect that they deserve.

Only 20 percent of our Congress is made up of women, while we make up about 50 percent of the population of the entire country. Out of those 20 percent, only 35 percent are people of color.

My feminism is not about wanting to be better than anyone. It's about me standing up for the fact that we still aren't represented in the places where it matters. Everyone deserves to be represented and to live in a place where they can relate to the people in power — and that just isn't the case with America today.

Yes, I can vote. Yes, I can own land and be my own person. But there are still women around the world who are being deprived of their basic human rights. I need feminism for them.

Who cares if there aren't any female NFL players? That's the least of my concerns. I want to see a female president in my lifetime. I want to be able to look at who's representing me and be able to relate to them.

Sorry not sorry, I never have and never will be able to relate to an old white man. They shouldn't get to decide what I get to do with my body and what happens when someone violates it.

If you're a woman and you don't believe in feminism or you don't think you need it, you're wrong.

It's a simple fact, and I want you to look into the eyes of any survivor of sexual assault or any woman who is being paid less for doing the same exact job as a man and tell them that you don't care about them.

That's what you do when you say you don't need feminism. You may not need it now, but someone else does. Someday, you might need something to stand behind or someone to stand behind you, and you're giving up on the one movement where you have millions of friends and sisters who will protect you and stand up for you in every situation.

I do not hate men because I am a feminist. I am a proud ally to every minority group in our country, and I will always stand up for you when you need support. I hope everyone would do the same for me.

Equality is not hateful. This movement has never been built on the idea of hurting other groups. But, it was also not built on the idea of things being "good enough." We've made progress, but not enough that our problems have been defeated.

I will continue fighting until everyone has proper respect and representation.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
