Female Fighters

Are they up for the job?

Female Fighters

It has long been a major debate in the United States about whether or not women should be able to fight side by side with our soldiers and Marines in the most hostile environments around the world. Having played mostly passive roles since wars as early as the American Revolution, they have slowly progressed up the ladder in our armed forces. They are now serving as nurses and technicians, have flown combat missions in Iraq during Operation Desert Fox, and gained much experience as 280,000 women were deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, although these occupations were limited (2010). Within the last few years, there has been a major push under the Obama administration to give women an even more active role within our armed forces, and with the first two women passing through the infamous Army Ranger School within the last month, they have all but proved that they are up for the challenge.

However, a recent study conducted by the United States Marine Corp has raised concerns about the Pentagon's push to open all military jobs to women within the next year. The study, which was released Sept. 10, has concluded that all-male ground combat squads were not only faster, but also stronger and more lethal in 69 percent of the 134 tasks given than squads which incorporated females.

“Any time we did movement under load, all-male groups outperformed integrated groups," said Paul Johnson, a Marine civilian official who helped develop and oversee the experiment. On marksmanship, men who had not been through infantry school hit targets 44 percent of the time with M4 rifles, besting infantry-trained women, who hit targets 28 percent of the time (Michaels). Accordingly, women also suffered higher rates of injury during their training, and greatly struggled with obstacle course exercises that required great use of upper body strength. With the deadline set by the Pentagon to open all military jobs to women, including infantry, special forces, and the notorious Navy Seals, it is important to see if these female fighters will be able raise their performance with more experience. The Marine Corp, which is made up of 7 percent women, is based around its formidable infantry and is often engaged in some of the most horrific fighting conditions seen on the battlefield (Michaels). In the types of harrowing scenarios that our military personnel face, even one weak link could mean the difference of life and death; not only individually but to everyone else as well.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
