"Are you their secretary? Oh, you only take phone calls... right?"
For the past two summers I've worked for my grandpa's construction company. The number of times someone has asked me the questions above is infuriating. People assume because I am a beautiful, feminine woman that I don't participate in dirty or back-breaking work.
I've had people tell me that they would never imagine me doing this type of work.
I've had people laugh when I tell them I work construction.
I am here to tell you that pretty girls CAN do hard labor... AND enjoy it!
In high school, I was a cheerleader and used to model for different local companies. Now, I load over 1,000 pounds of drywall, dig and install sewers, pour concrete and much more! I love makeup, dresses and heels but, I've always enjoyed getting my hands dirty. Please stop stereotyping feminine women. I do NOT have to look like a man to do a "man's" job.
Gender roles are not cool and belittle all genders. Big burly men can care for children, paint beautiful canvases, and cook tasty meals. Gorgeous women can work construction, fix cars, and drink beer. It's more common than people choose to see. You don't have to look a certain way to do what you enjoy!
Don't assume or stereotype people... they WILL surprise you!!
