Chicago was the place to be this weekend.
I just came back from Wizard World Comic Con in Chicago, Illinois and the geek factor was on 24/7. However, I wasn't just being an overall geek, I was being an "X-Files" geek.
The truth was out there and it was with Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Mitch Pileggi and William B. Davis. Yup, you read right. It was an "X-Files" reunion and I had the incredible opportunity to get VIP for Gillian Anderson and a duo photo with her and David Duchovny.
If you know me at all, you know I am a huge "X-Files" enthusiast. This weekend was going to be a dream and truth be told, it was everything and more than I expected. Now, I've never been to a comic con before (also never been to Chicago), so I didn't know what to expect. I was going to be alone in a place where you were free to be whomever you wanted to be. A week before, I had my doubts of whether or not I was able to survive meeting one of my idols alone, but I didn't let my anxiety and introvert-ness put me down.
I had a weekend pass (August 18-21), but I decided to start the journey on Friday the 19th. I made my way to the convention center via the Hyatt Regency O'Hare and from the moment I took the escalators down to the center of the convention, I was in awe. Everyone was dressed up, wearing their fandom shirts, taking pictures and overall letting their geek flag fly. I made my way over to pick up my tickets and I can't complain, my package was a good one. I got a huge bag, lanyard with the VIP ticket, one photo and autograph ticket for Anderson, an "X-FIles" comic book and two seatings to the "X-Files Reunion" panel. Once I had the items in my hand, I couldn't believe that this Miami gal was actually here.
I took the chance to walk around the venue so that come Saturday, I knew where to go since I began as early as 11 a.m. I went to all the exhibition halls and it was something out of this world. From Funko Pop! dolls to drawings to comic books, there was something for everyone. It was also very packed but the atmosphere was nice. I went to the autographs section and spotted my two favorite people's booth so I was ready for the craziness that Saturday was going to be.
Fast-forward to Saturday morning, I arrive at the con at around 9 a.m. and with an empty stomach, I went straight to the line to get in the hall to start making the line for Gillian's autograph. I waited around 30 minutes with a bulk of other people, but once they let us in, everyone went to explore on their own and thankfully, I maneuvered myself to Gillian's booth and made it to the second row of her already filled line. Alone and bored, I knew this was going to be a long and heavy wait. The crew then began to move people out of the lines, meaning people with Premium or Gold passes for the weekend had to be in a separate line, meaning they were gonna go first. A little disappointed, my VIP group moved across Gillian's booth and I was in the first row of VIP. From there, it was around a two hour wait time just standing. She came out, but she is so small, I honestly couldn't get any glimpse of her. Also, I'm short. I started noticing that there was a lot of Gold package people still waiting and we were after they were finished. So in the mist of the grunting, I was able to finally talk to some people around me. The conversation began flowing and the line began to move. We were moving pretty fast and I finally got a chance to see her and what a gem.
I was too scared to take pictures, but I got one! I was what you call fingerling and it was totally fine in that line because everyone was on the same boat. Finally, we were in the final line and I handed the crew what I wanted Gillian to sign which was my article that I wrote on the impact Scully has/had on television. The moment soon came. I was up. I immediately greeted her with a very enthusiastic "Hi!" and she said "Hello, ah AleJANdra," and me, a blabber mouth, began to say what she was signing but stopped in explaining because I was just so awestruck. Also, she was reading my article with the little time she had and you could just see it in her concentration and face she was so grateful. She then told me, "It was nice to meet you," and what happened next shocked me the most. She took out her hand and wanted to give me a handshake. I knew this was her way of personally and more intently saying "thank you," and my heart was so full.
After I got her autograph, my new friend and I went together to the panel that was happening in an hour. We got in line and met another fan and we decided to stick together and I just gotta say, that was what really made my day a lot more special. To have someone to talk to and tell about how happy you are and for them to have the same feelings was so, for lack of better words, cool. We made it in the panel room with middle seats and it was all happening. Previous panels were better, I have to honestly say. The only relatable thing was Gillian refusing to accept that a season 11 of "The X-FIles" was something that was going to happen. However, knowing Gillian and the amount of trolling she did for season ten, I had a hard time believing her.
BTW: The shirt Gillian was wearing, she bid it for charity and someone bought it for 3k. Amazing.
Anyways, photo time! It was time to actually take a picture with the spooky queen. The photo ops went by so fast, but when it was my turn, I felt like it was a lifetime. She greeted me and immediately put me into a side hug. Now, for Gillian, I knew before she like boundaries and I am totally on board with respecting what celebrities request. But, her hug man, it threw me off in such a good way. She was so comfortable and when I handed her my Mulder Funko Pop!, she put our heads closer and we took the pic. We said our goodbyes and thank you and I was on cloud nine. I couldn't believe what just happened and how everything happened. When I got my picture, you can tell I'm just happy as ****. Sorry, but that was really how I felt. I had lowered my expectations, and what I got was more than I planned.
Time for the duo Duchovny and Anderson photo! This one was fast and probably was good idea because I would have embarrassed myself inform of them. Short and simple, I went in, got in the middle, David said, "Hello! How are you?" and I had to look up because he was tall. Smiling at the camera, I was being squished by my two favorite actors.
Well, that was it. I said my goodbyes to my new friends and was off to stare at al my pictures and be on cloud nine for a while. It was the most amazing thing I ever experienced and I can't wait to do this all over again.
