The first snow fall is always such a magical experience. As you watch the ground get covered in little white snowflakes, you feel giddy inside. Just seeing this makes you want to throw on tons of layers and go outside. For the first week or so it’s like this, but after a little while (a couple days), it grows very old. Suddenly the idea of dressing in so many layers that you look like Randy from A Christmas Story is not so appealing. The cold sweats you get after walking two blocks is practically hell. You find yourself counting down the seconds until the snow melts, the weather warms up, and you can finally step outside without the fear of getting wind burn on your face. Unfortunately, winter can really complicate your style game. Here are some of the reasons why winter is the worst for fashion.
1. Static hair from hats.
Make that static everything actually. Hats are an essential part to your look in the winter time. Somehow bloggers always look so cute with their beanies on. When anyone else tries to wear a beanie, there’s so much matted hair when you take it off, it will be next winter by the time you brush out all of the knots. You might as well just call it quits and accept that you’d be better off getting frostbite on your ear lobes.
2. Being freezing outdoors but warm inside.
This is the absolute worst. There’s nothing like layering on two hundred pounds of winter gear and then having to carry it around everywhere inside. It makes it impossible to enjoy doing anything. I have 99 problems, and they all could be fixed if I didn’t have this heavy winter coat in my hand.
3. When you have so many layers on that it’s impossible to bend your arms.
We’ve all been there before. You try to layer a really cute sweater over another shirt and when you put your jacket on, you suddenly look like you’re doing the robot every time you breathe. Your jacket just isn’t capable of handling all that sweater. For the rest of the day, you go around shifting uncomfortably to text, swipe your metro card, and to even do something as simple as opening the door.
4. Anything besides snow boots are a huge no when the ground is icy.
Besides the fact that brown, slushy snow doesn’t exactly make me want to throw on my new, white shoes and go for a walk around the block, the ice adds to the sidewalk disappointment. Wearing anything besides flat, water-proof winter boots is a really bad idea. I have seen way too many people slipping and falling because they were wearing inappropriate footwear. You will literally look like a newborn baby penguin struggling to waddle if you wear anything besides boots on those icy days.
5. Your going-out clothes drastically change.
Cute little dresses and heels turn to turtlenecks, mom jeans, and fuzzy socks. Trust me, there’s nothing more attractive than rocking old-school long underwear underneath your mini skirt. If you really want to impress people, be sure to wear your ski mask and fuzzy ear muffs too.
6. It’s impossible to wear something different every day.
Unless you spend your days rolling in money, you’re probably like the rest of us and only own a single winter jacket. This leads to a lack of variety in your outfit each day, because let’s be honest, there are only so many different combinations of scarfs and hats that work will work. Winter is tough, man.
