In This Article:

As a certified fall and winter enthusiast, I thoroughly enjoy the cold months. In fact, I like them so much that while others are enjoying the last days of summer by the time September rolls around, I'm often annoyed that it isn't fully cold by then. Also, don't even get me started on how disappointed I was when the weather forecast for Christmas 2020 included snow, but it was 60 degrees and rained instead...

The point is, I can definitely help you find things to hang onto during these colder months, especially when it feels like it isn't just the weather that's cold. In whatever situation you may find yourself in, I hope these ideas help you find some warmth within and without.

1. Out with the old

It may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but organizing and purging your space can really help you feel lighter. I have to admit that I didn't quite understand it at first, but once I began taking out old things out of my own closet, the easier it became and the lighter I felt. Start small and with any area of your space, and definitely don't feel pressured to do multiple areas in a short amount of time.

2. Take stock of what you have and anything you may need

Continuing with the above, organizing is the perfect time to take stock of what you have, no longer need, and may need in the near future. There are also plenty of sales in the new year, so having a list of exactly what you might need will make your shopping more purposeful, and making this list on a regular basis will also make your lifestyle more sustainable.

3. Curate your closet

Sweaters have always provided me a source of warmth and care during the winters, and are actually a significant reason why I love cold weather. Choose one form of winter wear - socks, sweatpants, sweaters, etc. - that makes you look forward to your outfit for the day. Using that as inspiration, curate a small collection that makes you feel good, reflects well on your personality, and makes you feel happy.

4. Blankets and throws

A blanket or throw is an economical way to brighten up, decorate, or redesign any room. It's also an easy way to add a pop of color or complete a monochromatic-themed room. The only rule of thumb when choosing your blanket is that it should generate at least one positive emotion: whether it's happiness or hope or anything in between, choose beautifully!

5. Candles and soft string lights

Possibly one of the simplest ways to add the most metaphorical and physical light to your space and soul is through candles, string lights, or both. These are easily available in-store and also online and come in a variety of scents and colors so you can transform your space with true intention. The best part with candles, especially, is that you can change them according to your mood and the season, so there's always something small and special to look forward to when change comes.

This new year, see if you can take one of these ideas (or any of your own!) to mindfully liven up your living area. Our outer surroundings can genuinely add to our peace and gratitude, and my hope is that these ideas do just that. 💛

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
