It is 2009 and Taylor Swift is accepting the award for "Best Female Video." Unless you have been living under a rock, you know what happens next. Kanye West infamously got onto the stage and interrupted her, grabbed the microphone and said "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time." Taylor was still at the beginning of her career at this point with only two albums under her belt. Since then she has moved past the incident, even writing a song about it which would later be released on her third album "Speak Now" called "Innocent." The song is Taylor's way of forgiving Kanye, with some of the lyrics being "Your string of lights is still bright to me. Oh, who you are is not where you've been. You're still an innocent."
It's six years later and Taylor is presenting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, essentially MTV's lifetime achievement award, to Kanye West. Taylor praised Kanye, saying “I have been a fan of his since I can remember because Kanye defines what it is to be a creative force in music, fashion, and well, life." She even joked about the 2009 VMA incident, saying “I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but Kanye has had one of the greatest careers of all time!"
You would think that after all of this time Kanye would quit starting drama with Taylor. I mean it has now been seven years since the VMA incident and Taylor and Kanye have buried the hatchet.
Or have they?
It seems that although Taylor has moved on to better things, Kanye is not done dissing the pop star.
Last week Kanye had a listening session for his new album "The Life of Pablo" which included a lyric dissed Taylor Swift.
The Lyric:
"I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why, I made that bitch famous / God damn / I made that bitch famous,"
When I first read the lyric I didn't even know what to say. Taylor has never said anything negative about Kanye. Not after the VMA incident, not ever. Why does Kanye keep picking on her?
While the internet was buzzing with opinions on his lyrics, Taylor's brother Austin, posted a video on Instagram of him throwing his Yeezys in the trash can with the caption "Getting a head start on some spring cleaning. Here we go again."
Kanye, of course had to give his three words on the subject, taking to Twitter to explain why it is okay that he included that lyric in his song.
So let me get this straight. Kanye expects us to believe that Taylor was the one who came up with the lyrics and Taylor was the one who wanted him to include it in his song? I may not know Taylor personally but I have been supporting her for ten years and I can say with full confidence that she did not approve of the lyrics nor did she create it herself. Taylor has not personally said anything about the situation, because unlike certain people, she doesn't need to cause or acknowledge drama to get attention.
I truly hope that Kanye will stop dissing Taylor because she has literally done nothing to him and she doesn't deserve it. None of the people Kanye has dissed deserved it, but for right now I am focusing on Taylor.
I, along with many others, are tired of reading about Kanye and Taylor Swift drama. It is one-sided, even though the tabloids talk about it as if it is a feud. It is no feud considering that Taylor buried the hatchet years ago and Kanye is the one continuing to cause problems.
Both Kanye and Taylor have better things to focus on and I hope that once this blows over, we will never hear about drama between the two superstars.
