I am a white, female, young adult. Middle class, hardworking parents. Christian household, but never in a shove-it-down-your-throat-LOVE-YOUR-LORD kind of way. I’m not a political science major, but I stay current on the events. I believe in equality of the sexes and races. I guess you could say I’m a pretty average representation of the 21-year-old female population. Also, I will not be voting for Trump, and I will not be voting for Hillary.
For a long time, I was on the Anyone But Hillary train, then I jumped on the Trump Sucks bandwagon, only to realize neither of these candidates are worthy of my vote. These choices are an insult to our intelligence, our dignity, and our strides towards equality. I wouldn’t trust either of them to watch over my dogs for a long weekend, let alone my country for four years. Oh my god, possibly eight. The truth of the matter is, Hillary is probably going to win, and although many think, “well at least it’s not Trump,” I generally like to have a little more enthusiasm towards the leader of the Greatest Country on Earth than using the lesser-of-two-evils technique.
Hillary is basically going to be another term of Obama, which is basically like not even having a president at all, and just telling Congress to wing it. She’s more empty promises and long winded, highly rehearsed speeches of exactly what Americans have been brainwashed into expecting to hear from a candidate. She’s the exemplar of a corrupt politician, and while all her women’s healthcare rhetoric was refreshing after the “THEY RIP THE BABY OUT OF THE WOMB THEY JUST RIP ‘EM RIGHT OUT” debacle, she, as much as Trump, is unfit to defend women’s rights. She couldn’t even stand up for herself in her own marriage and we expect her to defend all of us? She takes money, millions and millions and millions of dollars, from countries that do not allow women licenses or educations, let alone the right to have an opinion. When I have a little girl one day who wants to know about the first female president of the great United States, I will be embarrassed to admit to her it was Hillary Clinton.
Trump, on the other hand, is a mess. If you really listen to him speak, he doesn’t say much. He has no well thought out plans, and without the 30+ years of experience that Hillz has, he can’t even smooth talk his way around the issues. (Maybe his ISIS plan is a secret? Is that why his hair is so big?) Honestly, I can sometimes understand why people want to vote for Trump. They’re the same ones that think Obama was the worst president we’ve ever had and don’t watch many debates to hear the word-vomit that spews from his mouth. They want change, they want to hear someone yell and scream and act out and make a scene. They don’t want to see a polished old lady in a frightening pant suit talk calmly while our country is in a state of somewhat chaos, but that cannot plague the judgment that this man is not fit to be president. Consulting him on matters of business? Maybe. Putting nuclear codes in his hands? Please dear God, no. It’s kind of like when an awful singer tries out for American Idol, and you vote for them a few times for the fun of it, because “they’ll never win,” but then they’re one of only three people left and you start to get nervous. That’s Trump. I don’t even really think he expected to get this far. And when that same little girl asks me one day about the fight for women’s rights, I don’t want to tell her about the 40-year setback that occurred when we elected Donald Trump.
When November 8th rolls around, I’ll exercise my right to vote, of course, but not for either of those candidates. Many have defended voting for Trump as a last effort wake up call to Hillary—she’ll still win, but the closeness of the vote will scare her. To me, voting is a more precious, coveted right than one to use so. Women died fighting for this right, and I’m not going to use it in support of Trump, even as revenge on Hillary. Call me a pessimist, but my vote barely matters to begin with, so maybe I’ll vote for Gary Johnson. Jill Stein scares me a little and I think the Green Party is hiding something. When I look at Gary, he seems least likely of the three to kick a puppy. So that’s what I’m going on.
