Why You Should Watch "Hey Arnold"

As we millennials grow into our 20's and 30's, the classic cartoons from our youth are disappearing, like "CatDog," "Ed, Edd n Eddy," "Courage the Cowardly Dog," "Rocket Power," and "The Wild Thornberrys." Unfortunately, the programs that we grew up with, related to, and think back on with nostalgic minds are almost extinct. However, with the help of Netflix or that sketchy YouTube channel that only posts videos of this caliber quality, we have the ability to revisit and re-watch our childhood favorites. One of these favorites is "Hey Arnold."

Here are some reasons why you should watch "Hey Arnold."

1. The setting is a realistic city.

Unlike other shows that portray a sugar-coated, posh version of a city, "Hey Arnold" is fairly accurate in depicting what life in Hillwood (a fictional combination of Brooklyn, Seattle, and Portland) would have actually been like during that time. The cast is ethnically diverse, the kids go to a public school (not an upper upper class private school in Manhattan that probably serves filet mignon, a side of caviar, and Voss water for lunch), and sometimes you can even spot some well-known landmarks in between scenes like the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Sunset Arms in Seattle.

2. The characters are ultra-relatable.

Although Arnold’s futuristic lair-room and Helga’s linear unibrow are a little on the unattainable side, their (and their friends’) personalities are essentially a mixture of traits that we all possess and they are shaped by experiences that we have all been through. For example, Helga hides her 4th grade crush on Arnold with an uncaring façade, Arnold is too sympathetic for his own good, Gerald and Arnold have a forever-bromance, Eugene can’t seem to escape his horrible fate of constant unluckiness, and the entire cast goes through several coming-of-age situations.

3. It’s hilarious.

The series’ sense of humor is one that any millennial would appreciate. Far more mature than "Little Einsteins" and far less vulgar than "Family Guy," this cartoon is a perfect mixture of innocent comedy and subtle adult comedy. Do you remember that time when you watched "Mean Girls" at 12-years-old and then revisited it years later and finally understood what “half-a-virgin” means? It’s like that, but to a lesser degree and not sexual.

4. It’s nostalgic.

Chances are good that you used to watch "Hey Arnold" religiously (or maybe every once in a while, depending on whether you were primarily a Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, or Disney Channel kid). Either way, the show will most likely bring back memories of PB+J sandwiches, the rust colored shag carpeting in your grandmother’s house, and that overall euphoric feeling of being a child. If you’ve never watched "Hey Arnold," worry not. The mere illustration of the setting and characters, along with the strictly-elementary-school situations, are sure to bring you back in time.

5. It’s educational.

It’s not educational in a “the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell” way, but in a morally fundamental one. Throughout the show you’ll hear advice regarding how to make and keep friends, seeing the true colors of someone’s personality, and the insignificance of age. Keep in mind, though, not to take the show too seriously. We don’t want anyone thinking that "monkeynucleosis" is a real condition.

6. You can tell all of your friends about it.

Don’t hold in your excitement about revisiting such a classic and mood-heightening program. Voice your passion to your friends, your English class, or that stranger making awkward eye contact with you on the train. Even if you can’t shut up about watching this long-lost favorite, at least one member of the audience is sure to benefit from your discovery.

Here's the first episode. Have fun watching!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
