In college, a lot of people have to work their way through school to pay for their tuition, pay rent, purchase books and afford a college student's social life. So when looking for a job, the best place to start looking is for on-campus jobs. Most people may think cafeterias only hold on-campus employment, but there are many more opportunities.
On MSU's campus, there are jobs offered at different cafeterias around campus, Sparty's, concessions, Starbucks and more. There is also the option to work in maintenance, work at the front desk for dorm halls , work parking on game days, become a teaching assistant for your favorite professor, work within the administrative buildings, etc., etc. These are just some of the great job opportunities, but why would someone want to work on campus?
- Flexibility- While working on campus, your employers will adjust to your class schedule and understand when you're involved in other clubs or activities taking up your time, as well. For most of the on-campus jobs, the schedule stays consistent throughout the whole year.
- Pay- On-campus jobs usually pay pretty well, maybe even a little better than a normal job that you could get. Another bonus is that you receive a raise each year you work on campus.
- Promotion- Most on-campus jobs are student ran, and there are only a few people who oversee the whole department, so there is always room for promotion. It really depends on how much you want to put into the job. Sometimes, depending on the department, you can move within the department to different jobs if you get tired of doing something and need a change. The other thing with getting a promotion is a pay raise is usually attached, which is always nice.
- Coverage- If something comes up out of no where and you need someone to take your shift, it is usually pretty easy to get someone to cover for you. There are always people asking and looking for more shifts to make some extra cash, so use these co-workers to your advantage.
- The People-The beauty of working on campus is that you work with such a diverse group of people. During each shift, you have the potential to work with a new face or gain a new experience. As the weeks go on, you really get to know the people you are working with and eventually make friendships that last forever. Very rarely will you run into someone who you do not enjoy working with, and for the most part, this job is getting them through college just as much as it is helping you.
I have worked on campus for fours year now and the people that I have meet through work have become some of my closet friends. So if your wallet needs some loving, check out these awesome on-campus jobs. You won't regret it.
