Unless you're living under a rock, I'm sure you are all aware that the hit show "Gilmore Girls" has been picked up by Netflix for a four-part reboot. While I was never a fan of the show growing up, I was curious as to why my Facebook friends thought that this news was the best thing since sliced bread. So I decided to give it a try -- and I was immediately hooked. The witty one-liners, the strong characters, the ideal little town of Stars Hollow -- it all sucked me in. Now I'm only a few episodes away from the series finale and like the rest of the Internet, anxiously awaiting the reboot.
While part of me is disappointed that I was so late jumping on the bandwagon (no one cares when you live tweet while watching an episode that premiered almost a decade ago), I'm also glad that I waited until the age of 21 to get into the show. I feel as if I've learned a lot of life lessons and absorbed some important information that I may have overlooked back when I was younger. After all, it can be hard to see the bigger picture when you're caught up in the Gilmore girls' love triangles.
So without further ado, here are some major reasons why "Gilmore Girls" is definitely one of the best shows for young adults.
1. Rory's brilliance is inspiring.
I don't know about you guys, but watching Rory kick butt in school and just succeed overall really inspired me to get organized and serious about the future. I've never had a Netflix binge session that made me want to study so much before in my entire college career.
2. Lorelai's independence is amazing.
As a young woman, there is a lot of pressure to find Mr. Right and get married out of college. Growing up with that kind of message forced on you makes it seem as though you're worthless without a man. However, Lorelai puts that assumption to shame. As a 16-year-old girl, she chose to leave her parents' house with her newborn baby and start a life on her own rather than marry her boyfriend. Throughout the series, we see Lorelai as a strong, smart, hilarious single mom who has romances in her life but also has a life outside of the men that she dates. She puts herself, her happiness, her daughter, her friends and her business first, and I think that's so important. There's no shame in being in love, but every girl needs to feel empowered on her own rather than needing a guy to validate her.
3. It's realistic and relatable.
OK -- so maybe we can't all relate to the extravagance of Emily and Richard Gilmore's residence, but other than that, the show is relatable. It is almost like a conversation with a friend about everything from family and relationship drama to money problems.
4. It makes you appreciate coffee.
I don't know about you, but I never realized how much I undervalued coffee until I started watching "Gilmore Girls." Thank you, coffee, for everything you do!
So if like me, you avoided watching "Gilmore Girls" because you believed it to be too much like a melodramatic soap opera for your taste, give it a try. Be sure to whip up a pot of coffee and maybe some cheeseburgers ahead of time, though, because the show will make you crave both. A lot.
