Cuffing Season: proper noun [kuhf ing see-zuh n] : During the Fall and Winter months, people who would normally rather be single or promiscuous find themselves, along with the rest of the world, desiring to be "cuffed" or tied down by a serious relationship. The cold weather and prolonged indoor activity causes singles to become lonely and desperate to be cuffed.
The breeze is getting cooler, the leaves are turning your favorite white-girl shades of yellow, red and orange, and all of your friends are cuddling up with that special someone a little too close for your self-esteem. But that doesn't mean you have to, right? You can enjoy that pumpkin spiced latte (or if you're a guy, that iced cold game-day beer) with pride knowing that you're single, and honestly, you're doing it right. So let's dwell on a few facts that might have you rethinking that text to that random guy you met last night on the dance floor. It's time to realize that you don't need someone during "cuffing season".
Number one: You have everything to yourself. Your bed, your food, your personal space, your rules. Even if you don't like being alone, invite some friends over while they lay on one side of the couch and you lay on the other.
Number two: There's no worrying about cheating, being jealous, or getting hurt. What you do is all in your hands and there's no need to keep anyone else in mind.
Number three: More time with your friends. You can get close to your friends in college and laugh more than you ever have in your life. I'm sure they're happy to have you back from that relationship anyway.
Number four: Social media. No Instagram pressure or jealousy, no worrying about who favorited whose tweets, or whether or not you're in his or her profile picture on Facebook. Exhausting.
Five: You can make whatever kind of mess you want and never have to clean it. (Unless your roommate is on your case. Then I suggest cleaning.)
Number six: Parties, lots and lots of parties. Making new friends, new friends that you'll never see again. Getting crazy and doing things you never would've done otherwise.
Number seven: It may be cold during cuffing season, but go for a run outside. There's nothing more exhilarating than running when it's cold outside and staying in shape. Plus, you'll look awesome.
Number eight: FOCUS ON SCHOOL! It's almost midterm season, so that means library sessions with your roommates, your big, your little or with that delicious coffee you've always wanted to order.
Number nine: Dating around. Another great way to meet people and experience a casual fling with no strings attached.
Ten: No stress about dealing with someone else's emotions. You're doing you and that's all that matters.
So screw all those getting close to someone they'll probably drop mid-March. This is the time to be single and stay single as long as possible, despite what the media tells you. It's not all it's cracked up to be.
