Why You Should Join Greek Life

When it comes to greek life the stereotypes never end. If somebody isn't saying that you've bought your friends, they're probably saying something else that's terrible and untrue. These people believe that all greek life is is a group of judgmental and cliquey people getting together to party. This is far from the truth. There is so much more to greek life than vineyard vine shirts and sorority chants.

1. Becoming more involved with the community

It feels that you're always contributing to the community when you're involved in greek life. Whether you're going to a philanthropy event for another organization or doing your own community service, it always feels like you're doing something helpful and productive. You constantly hear about stuff going on locally and through being in greek life it is much easier to be involved with these things.

2. Having people who always have your back

When you join a greek organization you instantly have a huge amount of people that will always be there for you. Whether you need help studying or need a night out to get out of a funk, your sisters or brothers will be there for you. You can text your pledge class and they will all be there with advice and love in a matter of seconds. Joining greek life means that you will always have people who will defend you and help you when needed.

3. Get to help a great cause

Each organization has a different philanthropy where they get to help great causes. Joining a sorority or fraternity means that you get to help one of these causes directly. You get to participate in multiple events that help these organizations and amazing people. You get to make a difference with the people that you love.

5. The fun never ends

It is not the most important aspect of greek life but it does have it's perks. Being in a sorority or fraternity means you will go to multiple date functions and mixers. These create a perfect opportunity for you to dress up or dress to match a certain theme. You'll go, you'll cyclone to your hearts content, and best of all, you'll eat some good food. On top of the date functions and mixers you'll also have a ton of sisterhood or brotherhood events. These will be fun activities that allow you to bond with the people in your organization. The fun never really ends when it comes to greek life.

6. You're always meeting new people

Being in greek life means you will meet a ton of new people. Whether it's at a philanthropy event or you're attending or a mixer, you will make a huge amount of friendships with people in other organizations. The greek community is very close knit and it's extremely nice to meet so many genuine people.

7. Motivated to get good grades

People commonly believe that being in greek life will destroy their grades. However, for every organization there is a minimum GPA that you must meet. Being in greek life will motivate you to get the best grades possible. You are surrounded by people who want you to be successful as possible. This means that you will always have a study buddy at your fingertips. There are always people willing to tutor and cheer you on as you work for that 4.0.

8. The friendships will last a lifetime

When I joined greek life I was still adjusting to college. I had made some friends but none that I saw myself being friends with for the rest of my life. Joining a sorority allowed me to meet people who are exactly like me. They have the same values and never fail to make me smile. They accepted and loved me before they even knew me. By being in a greek organization I have been blessed to meet some of the most astounding people I have ever met. I know that if I needed them at 3 in the morning they'd be there for me, and they'll continue to be there for me for the rest of my life.

9. You're pushed to be your best self

It's cheesy and many will roll their eyes when they read this next statement but I truly believe that joining a sorority has made me the best person I have ever been. I'm surrounded by strong minded and incredible people all the time. They have influenced and inspired me to push myself and be the best version of myself possible. I would not be enjoying college as much without them and I thank my organization everyday for the love and motivation they have given me.

When people say that greek life is not for them I totally respect it. It is true that it really isn't fit for everybody. Some people would prefer to do their own thing and there is nothing wrong with that. But people should not be so quick to dismiss and judge greek life. It can bring so many wonderful things into a persons life. I joined greek life and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I encourage everybody to consider joining greek life because I know for a fact that you won't regret it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
