You never know who you could save.

Why You Should Become An Organ Donor
Sammi Vance

Everyone wants to feel like a hero. But most of us will not get the chance to run into a burning building or deliver life-saving action to a dying person.

However, there is one simple and quick way to be a hero in everyday life. Become an organ donor.

Now I know what you are thinking, “I am not healthy enough to be an organ donor.” Actually, if you become a donor and it comes to that time. They will only take what is healthy and what could save someone else’s life.

This means that even if you are a smoker, have asthma, or even Irritable Bowel Syndrome, they will only take healthy organs. Even those little healthy pieces of you could save someone’s life.

You may also be thinking, “How many people could I actually save with my donation?” According to the Organ Donor Network, one organ donor can save up to eight lives. The same donor can also save or improve the lives of up to 50 people by donating tissues and eyes. More than 120,000 people in the United States are waiting for organ transplants.

You by yourself could save so many people even after you have died. You would be a hero to those who live because of you.

You honestly never know who could be receiving your life-saving donation. While doing community theater, I was wearing my “Donate Life” shirt. I had one of the stage crew walk up to me and thank me for wearing this shirt and for being a donor. This was because he had received a life-saving organ donation more than ten years previous.

People are more willing to open up about their medical issues if they know that you are the type of person to be involved in making a change.

You really do not need your organs once you are dead. I mean seriously, people would not even have to know that you are missing internal organs. If you do not donate organs post mortem is like throwing away money.

There really is not a reason to keep your organs. You never know who you could save with your donation.

To put it bluntly, it would be selfish not to become a donor.

It costs nothing to become a donor.

It is quick and easy. Seriously, it is easy to sign up. You do not have to pay for it every week or anything. All you have to do is check a box and say that if something were to happen to you, they are allowed to save other people by using your organs.

Organ donation is one of the simplest acts that has to biggest impact. You could be saving a child who will grow up and possibly cure cancer or become president. What if they never received that life-saving donation?

You never know who you could save with just ticking one little box when you renew your license.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
