I never really understood Podcasts until about a year and a half ago. Podcasts have been around for a while now, but they are just now starting to pick up steam in the mainstream.
A few weeks ago it was announced that the wildly popular podcast, Serial, would stream on Pandora in hopes to bring more people into the Podcast realm. A lot of my classes are also incorporating a podcast project in one way or another, which solidifies even further how important they are becoming in our society.
If you're struggling to get into Podcasts, and don't know where to start, I compiled a list of my top Podcasts. Most of these are fun and can help you get used to the format without being too intimidated by it!
1. "Serial" hosted by Sarah Koenig
This Podcast broke every iTunes record possible, and is one of the most popular Podcasts to date. This Podcast tries to crack the case of the murder of Hae Min Lee. It's so captivating, even if you have never heard of the case before. I believe that the hype around this Podcast is something to 100% give in to; I did and I didn't look back. You will find excuses to keep listening, whether you are on the train, bus or just hanging around your room, you will want to listen to episode after episode.
2. "Coffee With Chrachel" hosted by Rachel Whitehurst and Chris Hubbard
A lot of YouTubers now have their own Podcasts, and while a lot of them are good, I don't really keep up with them. What makes this Podcast special is that Chris and Rachel chat about whatever is going on in the world or in their lives over a pot of coffee, and featured in their introduction is the soothing sound of coffee pouring. Each pot is made with coffee given to them by fans, which is also really cool. This Podcast is fun and doesn't really have a format which means they can talk about whatever they want, which makes fun, sometimes vulgar and downright hilarious. Even if you don't watch them on YouTube, you should check it out, especially if you are a college student.
3. "Throwing Shade" hosted by Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi
This was the first Podcast that I ever listened to and kept up with. It is a hilarious podcast that talks about important feminist and LGBTQ issues. It can be weird to think about serious issues being discussed in a comedic sense, but it really works. Even the theme music of this Podcast is on point!
And there you have it, my top three Podcasts, to get you in the Podcast mood! They really are a great thing to listen to, you just have to find your niche and run with it. It makes my commutes so much more entertaining, but it also provides something more stimulating than music without being seriously boring! If you are looking for something different to listen to, try a Podcast. If you have an iPhone, the app is a permanent one on your phone, so you might as well take advantage of it!
