An important lesson I've learned growing up is that it is extremely important to have someone that you can talk to about anything, anytime. Whether that person be your best friend, your mom, your dad, or just someone you're close to, it doesn't matter who it as long as you have someone there for you; they can make a world of a difference in your life.
I rediscovered the importance of having emotional support this year and it has made my life so much better. When you have someone to talk to who won't judge you, but will simply be there to understand and listen to what you have to say, it makes whatever you are going through so much easier. It does wonders for your mental health. To be able to talk through anything, no matter how insignificant it may seem to you, can instantly relieve some of the burden that you might be feeling.
One thing people tend to forget is that other people can offer a different perspective, guidance, and advice for just about anything and everything. They can be such a comfort at times when you think that no one could possibly comfort you. It's important to be reminded that you are truly never alone because when you have good friends, they will be there for you no matter what - especially when those friends come to you at an unexpected time in your life, they mean that much more to you.
Sometimes, the person that you end up being able to talk to the most is the person who shows up at your door during move-in day at college and you become inseparable from that moment on. Other times, it's the person you sit next to in class.
At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how you meet or what the circumstances are, it just matters that they are there. The friend that will always be there for you sometimes is basically you, but taller, or a different gender, and sometimes they are so different from you but you click anyways. It's those friends that might be quiet, but unveil a wonderful person once you get to know them. These people can be your best friend in the darkest of times. People can be such a help to us sometimes, but we often forget this because we are so busy with our daily lives.
When you have someone who is willing to call you past their bedtime, or friends who will show up at your doorstep when you've both had a case of the crappy Mondays, and just talk and laugh until those bad days don't seem so bad anymore, those are the types of people that you want in your life, because when you have someone to talk to, even if it is just about your day or a test that you don't want to take, it helps relieve so much stress.
That person you talk to may be two minutes or two thousand miles away, but none of that matters, because even if it the conversation is just over the phone or over text, it's worth it to talk it all out. Having a friend willing to listen to you could even save someone's life.
If you just trust the people around you, they will have your back.
