Why You Don't Want It All Figured Out

Because knowing what you're doing with your life is SO overrated.

Why You Don't Want It All Figured Out

If you’re anything like myself, you look at life as one big mystery: completely and utterly confusing. You might wonder what the point of it all is, or ponder the path you’re on and debate if it’s right for you.

In my opinion, we’ve all been there. Partook in that existential crisis. Some people just don’t get hit with it as hard as others do. Those people who seem to not be crushed by the mind-shattering, life-exploding realization that we are just a sack of skin and water insignificantly floating along in an infinite universe are the people who think they’ve got it all figured out.

Now don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against these people. In fact, I applaud them for achieving the state of mind that has so elusively evaded me. Yet to start accepting that I will not achieve that state of mind anytime soon, I’ve constructed a list of reasons as to why not having life figured out is a GOOD thing. And I thought it was my duty to share them with you.

1. Not mapping out your whole life means that you can never be disappointed with how it actually turns out

Life rarely ever goes according to plan. Might as well not face bitter disappointment and just take it as it comes. Now that doesn’t mean you can’t plan ahead, but that does mean that thinking you know what you want to spend your whole life doing might not always be the best idea. Having an open mind leads to new opportunities and adventures that you could have never dreamed of.

1a. Don’t let you limit yourself

We can do so much more than we may think. It is when we stay so focused on a tiny dot of paint on the wall that we miss the whole mosaic. If we embrace life for everything it has to offer that we may get the most out of it. You give what you get. Give an open heart and accept whatever life brings and you may just discover more about yourself and the world.

2. Knowing the meaning of life is overrated

No one living knows the meaning of life, so let’s not pretend. It is impossible to know what the measure of our life will be or where our spirits will go until that life is over. Many people use religion as a way to overcome the fact that no one knows for sure. Personally, I find the hundreds of thousands of religions fascinating, and like to look at them all. There is a lot out there, and it really is what you make it.

2a. Life could mean more than you think

Who knows? Life could have some immense meaning and point that our human brains are not yet able to grasp. Don’t put a limit on the measure and worth of your life.

2b. There could be no meaning

We could have been taking ourselves WAY too seriously this whole time. No one likes people who make a big deal out of nothing. Plus, thinking you know everything just gets boring.

At the end of the day, we are just one person on one planet on one branch of one galaxy in one humongous universe. If you don’t seem to have your life figured out at the moment, fear not. You are not alone. Because honestly, with a life this inconceivable, I’m not sure I want to know the meaning of it all anyways.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
