I never really considered myself to be a typical "yoga person" because I never really understood whether or not it was supposed to be relaxing or exercise. I have been taking yoga classes since August and although I didn't really enjoy it at first I seriously look forward to going every single week.
For me, I was always uncomfortable with classes because I didn't have a good foundation in the postures. To remedy this I looked into private lessons so I could get one-on-one attention and be comfortable integrating into classes. There really isn't a point to doing all of the postures wrong.
I found my current yoga instructor on Thumbtack, which is kind of like Craigslist and a telephone book. The rate is basically the same as a regular class in a studio and I don't have to take it with a bunch of other people which is a plus for me. If you are intimidated by classes, I highly recommend looking on Thumbtack or Craigslist for freelance yoga instructors. Make sure they are qualified and do a background check (or a quick Facebook snoop) to make sure the person is legit! Private lessons at studios are almost $100 per hour, which is very pricey!
Eventually I will probably start take more classes, but for now I like the tailored program and how knowledgeable my instructor is. If my posture is wrong, or I am not leaving enough space in my pose, she knows and can correct me on the spot. You don't get that in a class of thirty people simply because there isn't enough time to do that.
Even if you cannot take private lessons, I love the challenge that comes with yoga. I have learned over the past couple of months that yoga should be a balance of work and rest; challenging your body and then relaxing at the end of your practice.
I know that yoga has taken over the Instagram community, something that is up for debate in the actual yoga community, and that is why I was always so afraid. I don't need to be able to do a headstand or crow pose in my first class or lesson. There are so many steps and techniques that I need to learn before I can get there and that is ok!

Now that I have removed the imaginary competition from my brain, the tree pose is my favorite thing to ground me after a long day. I love seeing the progress is my flexibility, breathing and technique. I now know what corrections and alignments I need to make and I feel fantastic after the lessons!
I truly think that yoga is for everyone now and I am completely converted. Yoga is 100% body positive and you shouldn't ever think that it isn't! While I may not be able to contort like a pretzel, I know that my body can accept any challenge and overcome it with just a little bit of determination and some breathing.
My journey has just began, but that is what yoga is all about really; the journey is the most important, never the destination!
