Ever since I’ve began writing for The Odyssey some people have wanted to see more personal articles. Things like my thoughts on relationships or an experience with lost friendships but I have always chosen topics related to film and television. Lately I’ve been talking with some of our other writers about what they write about and it got me thinking, why do I write about what I write about? The simple answer is I just love film. But that’s obvious; everyone likes movies. What makes them mean so much more to me though?
Since I was a kid I was luckier than most to have parents that exposed me to all kinds of movies from every genera and every decade. It was normal in my house to have just about anything playing on the TV. I think it was 9th or 10th grade when I got Netflix and that’s when everything took off. I explored directors starting with Tarantino then going to Kubrick and The Coen Brothers. For the first time, I was able to expose myself to even more movies than the many my parents showed me. I practically studied the movies, watched commentary on them, read reviews, and explored the art of film as a whole. What movie is so good beyond a few hours of entertainment?
For me, it’s the crafting of a story and storytelling and the many different forms of art that it takes to do it. Film isn’t one man’s ability to create something. It takes many people with many very different talents to do it well. Films are some of the most intelligent forms of art there is. Thought is put into every frame just for it to be noticed and appreciated by a very small amount of people. Films are enjoyed on a surface level by most but there is so much more to them than most people realize. I do write because I love films but I also have some goals in mind as I do this. For me I write for practice to improve my writing as well as create pieces I can show off. My next move is to write for my school’s newspaper doing movie reviews. Writing reviews and analyzing movies isn’t the only thing I enjoy however. A long term goal of mine is to sell an original script.
So that is why I write about movies.
