In a world where we are bombarded with negative news every day, it is important to continue to find the good despite what we hear. Sometimes negativity can be glorified to appear as it's the "cool" thing to be sad. Despite all this negativity in our society that we are surrounded by, we must find ways to be happy.
We should choose happiness simply because life is too short to be anything but happy. As cliche as this sounds, the statement has truth to it. For me, it's realizing that my freshman year is coming to an end and college is already flying by. I am already regretting not making the most out of so many moments this past year. So in order for these next three years to be happier, I am going to take advantage of every opportunity. This also means finding the good in every situation. I believe that just these simple changes will contribute to a happier college experience overall.
I know it's easier said than done, and I am not saying it is not OK to be sad sometimes. There will be days when you do not want to talk to anyone or get out of bed. I think the solution is to allow yourself to have bad days occasionally but to the find the good in the bad. For me, the good is always that I am surrounded by so many people that love and support me despite how bad my day was. Or you can try to remember that all bad days have to come to an end. After a bad day, try to find the good in order to make the next day better than the previous.
There are so many things we can all do to be happier versions of ourselves. They can be as simple as picking up a new book, buying that new nail polish you have been wanting, or walking a dog. Or they can be more complex such as setting long-term goals or going on a weekend trip. Each of us has things that make us happy. Make a list of all the things you love and try to incorporate them more into your everyday life. While it is so important to make yourself happy, you should also strive to make others happy. You could say hi or give a smile as people walk past you. Or make cookies randomly for your friends. Simply just helping someone out will make you happier and feel better about yourself. It's true when people say happiness is contagious!
I think the most important part of being happy is the people you surround yourself with. These people often will reflect how you feel. This is why it is so important to be friends with people who support and love you for who you are. We should all choose happiness because we will be better people because of the choices we make.
