Starting earlier this month, students at college campuses around the country, most famously The University of Missouri, are protesting racial injustice and discrimination. Students at Mizzou have been threatening to walk out of classes in demand that their President, Tim Wolfe, step down. For months, "black student groups have complained of racial slurs and other slights on the overwhelmingly white, 35,000- student campus. Their frustrations flared when...black protesters blocked [President] Wolfe's car and he would not get out and talk to them."
The protests have continued for weeks and have sparked a fire in other students around the country. Many colleges, including Niagara University, have staged peaceful protests demanding more equality in their school. At Niagara, the Black Student Union (BSU) organized a protest on Monday, November 16, that started in Gallagher Center at 9AM, where students voiced their experiences with injustice on campus, then continued with a march around campus, and ending with a meeting with President Father Maher.
Racism is still alive and well today. It is crucial to listen to these student protesters and hear their complaints and demands. Although we may be blind to it, if so many students feel the need to come together and voice these major concerns, there must be a problem. A protest would not be necessary if injustice was not occurring.
Change starts with the individual. Policies can be altered and administration can be on board, but if the attitudes of the students on college campuses don't change for the better, inequality will never go away. We need to work together to make college campuses, and the world, a better, more equal place. Everyone should feel secure and treated equally no matter their sex, race, ethnicity, religion, etc.
Listen to these student protesters. Hear their concerns, their stories, and their experiences. We need to all come together to make this world a more equal, fair, and just place: and it can start right here on a college campus.
