In a time that many refer to as "The Digital Age," a vast amount of power is placed in the hands of the media. While TV is becoming increasingly less popular to watch, according to TIME, the meteoric rise of social media and the internet has given the media extra tools to provide viewers with the coverage of stories, rumors, and trends around the world.
Of all of the various things that the media controls, it sustains the most power over the Presidential election. It is extremely simple and terrifying how the media manages to do this.
In the 2016 Election Primaries, the way that mainstream media has manipulated common citizens into voting for certain candidates is through the amount of total coverage that they gear towards each individual candidate. It is not about the things that the media outlets say about every candidate, the policies that each candidate explains to the media, or about how often the media discredits or disses each candidate. Once again, the way that the media has enacted total control over the election is through the total coverage devoted to each candidate. The chart below from The Atlantic shows that the candidates who are topping the polls are the ones who are making the headlines in the media.
Do you understand it now?
What makes the claim that is supported by these statistics all the more terrifying is that Donald Trump is currently leading the race for the Republican Primary Nomination. Despite the fact that none of the media's attacks on Trump have negatively impacted his performances in the polls, mainstream media continues to attack the billionaire bigot. Why, if Trump is clearly gaining an advantage from this constant coverage, does the media continue to do this?
For some reason, media outlets across the country still hold onto the false belief that continued coverage of Trump's weaknesses, insecurities, racism, and lack of actual policy will take him down.
The one thing that Trump knows how to do better than any of the Presidential Candidates is grab the attention of viewers. He does this through stuttering, repeating himself, making racist and sexist remarks, evoking controversy, mocking reporters with disabilities, and spewing out the most ridiculous-sounding policies known to man such as "building a wall." He has cleverly utilized this skill to his full advantage as he continues to soar in the polls.
Several much more electable candidates from the Republican Party such as Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, and Rick Santorum were faced with no choice but to drop out of the race due to the lack of coverage that these candidates received through the course of the primaries.
In addition, the only truly electable candidates who are still in the running for the presidency from the Republican Party, John Kasich and Marco Rubio, continue to trail Trump due to their lack of overall coverage.
This continued nonsense also goes back further. In 2012, Ron Paul also suffered the same fate that all of the Republican nominees have suffered thus far. Ron Paul was single-handedly dragged out of the race by the corrupt monsters of the media. There was never a significant time when Ron Paul was exploited by the media for a wrong that he committed or for a policy that he set out. Instead, he was just silenced. Of course, it worked.
While there is no chance in hell that we can completely silence Trump, we can definitely take other necessary steps to take him down.
So, how about we all focus on the strengths of the other candidates from the Republican Party rather than the weaknesses of Trump? How about the media gets their sh*t together and starts actually doing more than trying to exploit Trump? Why don't we, as citizens of the United States of America, take the initiative to conduct research on every candidate to see which one is right for us, instead of simply choosing to be ill-informed and unconcerned outsiders who choose to vote for the popular candidate or to not vote at all.
Continue to keep America great or not, the choice is yours.
