I'm sure we've all noticed the new trend on social media where girls comment on their friends' photos calling them "skinny mini," "skinny," or "tiny" usually followed by heart eye emojis. Everyone loves a good compliment, but why is skinny a compliment? By definition, a compliment is something said in an attempt to make someone feel good about themselves. It's an expression of praise or admiration. So by saying that skinny is a compliment, does that mean that anything other than skinny is bad?
We should be showing love for all different kinds of body types. These stigmas give men and women complexes that can lead to low self-esteem, eating disorders, and depression. When we make a big deal about weight loss or change in body image, we may make someone feel like they didn't look good before they lost those pounds. So if and when they gain the weight back, they will feel that much more defeated.
It's good to encourage others and let them know you are proud of the progress they're making if you know they're working toward a weight loss goal, but there is a better way to go about doing so. For example, comment on how happy they look or tell them they look radiant, glowing, or simply beautiful.
There is nothing wrong with being skinny, and there is nothing wrong with having a full figure. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Every body is beautiful. We should show appreciation for all body types. Curvy women are beautiful. Slender women are beautiful. Muscular women are beautiful. Not every body frame is built to look the same.
Please do not strive to be "skinny mini." Strive to be healthy and happy. Don't stress about pounds or inches or sizes. Don't let a number define you or discourage you. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. Let's end the "skinny mini" movement. Spread the word and spread the love.
