Last week was deadly, but that is nothing new in America. Our generation is getting used to shootings in theaters, schools, malls and even churches. We are getting used to people scapegoating a group of people and hating them for the few bad eggs in their basket. We are getting used to that anxious feeling that haunts us whenever we go out. That feeling that says that we are not safe.
And, for one, I have had enough.
As a person with anxiety, I worry about everything. From what I look like to what I said three years ago. Literally, everything. However, what I don't want to worry about is if someone will come and gun me down while I am out with my friends. What I don't want to worry about is if my life is in danger just by going shopping. I understand that things happen and we can't prevent everything, but we can prevent this.
Some people believe that gun control means banning all guns, but that is not what I believe in. I believe in not letting someone buy a gun in seven minutes. I believe in checking that persons background and making sure they are mentally stable enough to own a gun. I believe in using it only when necessary.
20-somethings have lived through more mass-shootings than we should have. After the first one, lawmakers should have done something, anything. Instead, they assured us that this was a "lone-wolf" or an "isolated event". But they keep happening, and pointing fingers at people won't fix anything. Only real change will be a means in fixing a broken system.
No one's rights will be infringed upon by putting laws in place that keep guns out of the wrong hands. By not putting these laws in place, you are hurting the American people.
How many more shootings do we need to go through to get through to lawmakers? Hopefully zero, but who knows.
