There are so many things in the world that bring us as people together, whether it's family, friends, or good food. But it seems that sports have a different air to them, and they bring us together in a totally different way. Sports seems to grab people in a way that nothing else seems to do.
When people get together to watch a game and are rooting for the same team, it seems that their connection just forms immediately, because they have that same interest in a specific team. It even applies to people who don't know each other. I feel this is the most powerful thing that sports does.
When people join together in the stands of a stadium to watch the Patriots, for example, you seem to automatically want to speak to them, because of their allegiance to that team. I've certainly experienced this for myself while at a Bruins game a few years ago. I was sitting next to two other guys, and we automatically spoke to each other, because we were both there representing the same team, so we had that bond because of sports.
Sports has that unique ability to bring people together, as I mentioned before. People all over the world can come together though watching sports, and that's why it's so vital to building strong relationships with others.
Let's face it, sports may be the strongest relationship starter nowadays, because it's so prevalent, everybody watches, and it's so easy to make a connection with someone based on sports.
It really struck me that this was true when I was sitting on a plane next to a woman just a few days ago and the Sunday Night Football game and the World Series was on. She was a total stranger, but we just started talking about the game, and it went from there. The point is that talking about sports lead to us having a great conversation.
It really is amazing how much we can all relate to each other just by sparking a conversation about sports. It has such a profound impact on the world, and many people don't even realize it. So next time you see a stranger, start up a conversation about a sports topic; you could end up having a really great connection with that person. It really is amazing how much it can bring us together.
