Lorelai and Rory Gilmore are the two most inspiring women in TV history. Sure, Lorelai can be a little rude sometimes and Rory can be naïve, but their flaws make them that much more relatable.
Lorelai is extremely independent.
While sometimes that gets her into trouble, she knows what she wants and she does anything she can to get it. She left home at the age of 16 to raise a baby on her own and did everything she could to move up in the world while taking care of her daughter, Rory. She made sure Rory could do and be anything she wants, while achieving her own goals. Lorelai goes back to school to get her masters degree and ends up opening up her own business. Even though she talks extremely fast, she either gives really good advice or cracks a lot of good jokes and mentions pop culture references.
Rory makes being smart cool.
She always has a book in her hands and studies so hard that she ends up going to an Ivy League University. She’s never afraid to be herself or scared that other people will judge her. Rory and Lorelai both eat an absurd amount of food, even though they are both extremely thin. They never shame each other and no one shames them because they do what they want. Also, she’s never embarrassed to be seen hanging out with her mom on a Friday night. In fact, her mom was on her first date with her boyfriend, Dean! While she does have boyfriends throughout the series, the show ends with her being single (sorry: spoiler alert!). She’s an independent woman who picks her future over a guy. I truly admire that because so many stories end up with the girl sacrificing something important for her “soul mate.”
Their relationship shows the true strength and importance of a mother-daughter relationship. My mom and I watched the series during my senior year of high school and it brought us closer. It’s silly to think that a television show could have such an impact on us, but they went through a lot of the things on the show that we have gone through, and even more that we will probably go through in the future.
