Throughout this election cycle, we all heard the chant "LOCK HER UP" from Trump supporters and Republicans. Recently, we found out that Trump is doing a 180 on this proposal and has decided not to prosecute Clinton. This may seem like a small and petty policy reversal, but here's why it matters regardless of if you think Clinton deserves it or not.
During the election cycle, Trump and his surrogates claimed Clinton was a criminal who should be put in jail to rally voters. Now that they have won, they say that pursuing what they consider justice would be a waste of political capital. Trump himself has said that Clinton has been through a lot and suffered greatly and he does not wish to put her through any more suffering. This just makes no sense. If someone commits a serious crime like pay to play politics, then it doesn't matter what the criminal has "been through." Justice must be served regardless of that. If you think someone has put the country in serious danger through corruption and you are in a position to actually do something about it, a decent human doesn't think "Nah, I'll pass on that since it will waste a ton of political capital." There are only a two logical explanations to this. A) Clinton isn't actually guilty of anything and the Trump camp knows that so they don't want to bother with it now B) Clinton is guilty and Trump doesn't care about seeing justice served for the American people. He just wants power.
I feel like this is a metaphor for Trump's entire campaign and maybe 75% of politics in general. Say and hurt anyone to get elected, then say and hurt anyone to stay in power. Trump has already flip flopped on one policy proposition. Hopefully he can take a second look at some of his other terrible ideas.
