Summer Vacation: The three-month hiatus from school that students use as an excuse to employ their laziness with little to no productivity, and pretend like responsibilities are imaginary.
#TBT to the summers where your only worry was who was going to host the night's bonfire, or where you all were going to meet before you mindlessly walked around your hometown with no destination. At the time, you don't realize how much things are going to change, and it's almost as if you didn't have a final goodbye with your beloved and careless summer.
Sorry to break it to you my fellow college-goers, but this definition does not reign true for us anymore. Everyone knows you have to live it up with your high school crew the summer going into your freshman year of college, because summer is just not the same from there on out. You might be able to get away with a carefree summer after your first year, but even then things have changed substantially. Here are 5 reasons why summer just isn't the same anymore:
1. You are constantly reminded that you're broke, A.K.A summer means you have to make money and a lot of it.
You don't have an obligation to be a full-time student for three months. This is the perfect time to actually start putting away some big bucks so that come September you don't lose all faith when you see that your bill for the semester's books even higher than last year.
2. You know all of those concerts you wanted to go see? Yeah, JK, you need groceries instead.
Summer is the time of concerts, and if you budget well, some of them can still be opportune, but subconsciously you know you might be giving up some deli fresh turkey meat.
3. All of your friends are pretty much in the same ship, so say bye-bye to Wednesday afternoon beach trips.
You continue to make observations that all of your friends are just as summer-less as you, so unless it's the weekend some of them don't even exist. It takes some getting used to, but yeah, it sucks.
4.Taking classes? Oh and aren't they so much better in this heat?
Whether you're back at school taking classes or going to an alternative school in the area or not, the heat will encourage anyone to stay home.
5.The older you get, the seemingly less friends you have that live at home.
Finally at the age when your original crew is slowly, one by one, getting out of the deadbeat town and doing great things in cool places and big cities. That just leaves us remainders bored and friend-less.
I'm being a little harsh, “summer" has changed, but does it really suck? It's a new kind of experience that we just need to adjust to, but it's going to be okay. Because the sun is warmer, our skin is tanner, and the bars are still open.
