Why I Stopped Apologizing

When does saying sorry stop being polite?

Why I Stopped Apologizing
Odyssey

For many women, myself included, saying “sorry” is second nature. We grew up believing apologizing was one way of being polite, but not now as adults, we use it to begin basic affirmative sentences.

Women don't realize the amount of power that is behind the word "sorry." Ultimately, what's being downplayed in these situations is a woman's ability to empower herself. By not apologizing, she has the capability of normalizing what are considered as demands, to simply being what she needs.

Without the dropping of the “s word” a woman can be perceived as demanding or bossy to only herself but to the person she is talking to. Moving forward, we need to encourage women that their wants and needs are nothing to be ashamed of and as a woman, one's language needs to express empowerment.

This habit is not one to be gotten rid of easily. I've been on both sides of the table, as a server, telling another woman they shouldn't be sorry for wanting extra napkins and as a customer, being told not to be sorry for needing another cup of water. It’s important not to let this word make us feel like we are any less of a genuine person for not saying it all the time. This one word should not be the difference between being seen as bossy or nice, so as society lets no longer give a five letter word that much power.

While trying to transition into no longer apologizing, I’ve found it easiest to say exactly what I want to say. Instead of apologizing I will say a phrase that more accurately expresses the point I am trying to make. For instance, while trying to clarify what exactly my professor meant in his or her lecture, I will say exactly that. No more “I’m sorry but could you...” or “Sorry to interrupt but…,” just “Could you clarify what you mean by that?”

Despite this advice, it is up to you not to feel sorry for yourself. Saying sorry constantly to interrupt your thoughts does nothing more than make yourself feel smaller and your wants and needs less important, and there is nothing polite about that.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
