Why Skinny Shaming Is Just As Bad as All Body Shaming

Chicken arms. Chicken legs. String bean. Too thin. Too lanky. Too bony. No butt. Plank of wood. Maybe one day she’ll fill out. Salad? You’ll never get a normal body eating that. Pizza? Only you could eat pizza and still look like that. Your pants are sagging in the back. All your clothes are too big on you.

Shaming people for their body type is never okay. Nobody should ever look in the mirror and feel less than someone else because of their shape and size. This applies to people who are underweight as much as it does for people who are overweight. Sometimes, people forget about us skinny girls and guys and how we feel. I should not feel ashamed for being thin, yet I do.

Being thin, blonde and perky has become society’s depiction of beauty. When people began to rebel against that idea, people who did fit the image of beauty were put down. It was put down by pop music, articles, tweets and people just being straight-up rude to skinny girls and guys. Instead of rebelling by saying, “No, everyone is beautiful,” people became mean towards other. Girls and guys that weren’t a size zero were put down by people who were. Shirts were released that said “Zero is not a size." News flash: it is.

It isn’t fair to be skinny-shamed. People who were shamed for being overweight are now shaming people who are underweight. I’m sure that it is not easy being shamed for being overweight or having curves, but how is the solution to shame other people? People are born with fast or slow metabolisms, big bones, thin bones and different body masses. Overall, we don’t really choose our bodies. We just live with them.

My point is to remind everyone, big and small, tall and short, that you should be proud of the body you have. You should be confident in your own skin. It is those who are self-conscious that put other people down. If we could learn to love ourselves and stop letting celebrities model how they think we should look, the world would be a happier and less judgmental place.

It is hard being body-shamed whether it is for being too thin or too big. Even though we all know that no one should be “too thin” or “too big” society pressures us to look a certain way. It’s best to accept that there will be haters and to learn to ignore them. No one should ever feel less than anyone else because of their body. You have the choice of being your biggest hater or your biggest supporter. Be your biggest supporter, love yourself and don't judge others.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
