If you're anything like me, every year you grow more and more anxious for the approaching summer months, for a variety of different reasons. In my opinion, one thing that particularly marks that summer is officially here is the premiere of the "Orange Is the New Black." Since first premiering in 2013, "Orange Is the New Black" is growing more popular and getting more viewers each year. I will be honest when I first heard of the show, I had no interest in watching it, I assumed it was nothing worth my time— but that changed during season one, episode one.
Many shows today have a main character, who is also referred to as the protagonist, and this show is no different, the main character of this show started off being Piper Chapman. Eventually with each episode, that passes the audience soon realizes that while Piper is the main character, there are other significant characters as well which takes a little bit of the spotlight off of Piper and adds it on the other cast members. My favorite character on the show is definitely Ms. Poussey Washington and Ms. Daya Diaz. "Orange Is the New Black" only is shown on Netflix, which is a question many interested viewers wish to know.
One reason for the show’s increase in popularity is because we all have this idea in our head of what prison should be like, and "Orange Is the New Black" goes against that in every aspect. I think this show has grown to be greatly liked because of more than the plot, it contains a very diverse cast. Having a diverse cast touches viewers everywhere and is different than a lot of the shows on television even today. One of my favorite aspects of the show besides the fact that it is downright hilarious and I dare anyone to think otherwise, is the character flashbacks that are shown throughout episodes, highlighting how characters ended up in the slammer. The drama in this show is entertaining but the cliffhangers and unsolved questions really have you sitting on the edge of your chair.
The show is a bit inaccurate but it is real in a lot of ways. For example, it highlights some key points about women’s prison such as the bullying, the relations (both between inmates and between guards and inmates) and of course, the cliques. However, as weird as it sounds "Orange Is the New Black" makes prison look fun... yes, I said that. The show is the furthest thing from reserved, the cast hold back nothing so be prepared if you choose to become an "OITNB" viewer. I appreciate that it is a show about women that makes it all the more entertaining.
Viewers learn to grow a love-hate relationship with the characters on the show and it’s director for leaving us hanging! So every summer I, along with the rest of the world, binge watch "Orange Is the New Black." I binge watch the show until completion and then I get heartbroken when I come to the realization that I must wait approximately another 365 days to fulfill my needs all over again. I am proud to announce that season four just released about a week ago, and season five, six and seven are already contracted so there is plenty more to come! I have yet to start watching season four, but know with certainty I will not be disappointed. I always say if "OITNB" has not made you want to go to prison even once, you do not appreciate the beauty of this show.
Happy "OITNB" season!
