Music possesses a great power that often goes unnoticed. It is a crucial element of our lives, and we take it for granted. Without music, we would have nothing to dance to, celebrate or mourn with, and many people would lose their escape from the hectic nature of their everyday lives. Hidden talents would go undiscovered, and people would be less apt to express themselves in the ways that music allows them to. Imagine your life was exactly what is today, except without music. How does it look? Gray? Dull? I would even go to the extreme of saying lifeless, because that is exactly how I imagine mine would be.

Music is a media that connects people from all over the world--it is, essentially, a universal language. No matter your race, religion, gender, social or economic status, or any other discriminatory characteristic, the passion and love that we all share for music will always connect us to each other. You can always have music in your life because, unlike many things, music does not discriminate.
Without music, there would be no awkward middle school dances, no sing-a-longs on road trips, no first dance for newlyweds and essentially, no sense of awe that makes the world so wonderful. The art of music is something that the society revolves around, and it is such an integral part of our lives that sometimes we forget how unique and special it is--we forget how blessed we are to have it in our lives. The world would be eerily quiet if there was no music in the chirps of birds or the whistles of the wind, no theme songs to television shows, and no background music to accompany this roller-coaster we call life. Music defines decades, generations, historical events, and so much more, and it gives life to, well, life!
Who doesn't listen to a song and suddenly find themselves reminiscing on past events in their lives? They could be moments of celebration, depression, excitement or failures, and yet with one word, one note, or one entire song we find ourselves reliving whatever moment it was. The lyrics touch our souls and allow us to connect to the world in ways that we never imagined we could. Going through a tough break-up? Taylor Swift is your girl. Need to get pumped up before a championship game? I'm sure there is a Lil Wayne or Drake song for that. Having trouble focusing while studying for a huge exam? Intense piano or acoustic music is your go-to. Essentially, there is at least one song for every emotion, every event, and every moment you experience, and you most definitely cannot say that about any other media. Music is the only thing you can both celebrate and cry with, dance to and fall asleep to, all within the same day.
Music is, and forever will be, evolving, growing and expanding to levels unimaginable to society. New genres are constantly generated, new sounds and styles are created, and yet music from generations past never seem to die out--they are the classic albums, the number one hits, and the most popular singles of their times. Older generations of music regain popularity in newer generations of people, and the magic never seems to die. Don't act like you don't get overly excited when "Sweet Caroline" and "Come on Eileen" play at frat parties in between "Hotline Bling" and "Sorry".
This article does not even begin to put a dent in how truly special music is, and it would take many more articles to fully explain it. Famous musician Stevie Wonder once said, "Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand." The great philosopher Plato stated "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." Well, it has been about 2,364 years since Plato said this, and yet it still holds true. If that doesn't prove how timeless and amazing music is, then I don't know what does.
