I have spent countless hours reading lyrics as if they were poems set to the rhythm of the heartbeat. My breath fades in and out as the treble runs through my veins. Then leads to a central focal point of harmony the settles in rhythm with my pulse. Music is a form of expression like no other. Every genre allows for a new outlet of emotion in a different light. Music comes from all over the globe and has countlessly been a response to oppression of cultures throughout history.
From this comes music that we have evolved to the struggles of today. Songs that captured the depth and devastation of the black plague are now nursery rhymes we sing to our children for them to sleep easier. The songs of slaves define cultures all over the globe as their outlet for hope through tried times. We each have our own genre we relate to best as well. We communicate through music; our darkest thoughts and greatest worries are personified with the melodies of our era. You can say what ever you want, as long as you truly believe in it. Trust me the audience can hear the difference between trying to make a point and letting your passion shine through talents that are the gemstones found in few artistic souls.
Besides the point of music representing cultures, music represents everything that is right with society and the freedoms we are lucky enough to be afforded. Music changed the way I see myself, the immediate world around me, and understand the global impact of how I’m living my life. I have been down on my luck and simply let Pandora take over my music selection and on countless times I have been offered the opportunity to relate to an artist.
In which I have never had any interaction with before the very moment they gave me the ability to say its okay to feel the way I am. Someone I have never met, someone that is just trying to chase a dream of making it. They produced something that can connect with me? This ability is terrifying, that you can put all your worries down on a track and they can be picked up and personified halfway across the globe. Music is the heart monitor for society; its beat lets us know we’re still alive.
Finally music is my friend, my best friend. Members of my family, and people I surround myself with all have their way of creating music. For me to be so close to the creative process, I have witnessed many of the struggles these friends and family members are going through. I have seen how they have twisted it to offer their perspective of relatable perseverance with their talents.
People create music to release everything that they are pinning up inside. Music is my guardian, my drinking buddy, and my mediator to the real world when I have nowhere else to go. Music is its own form of life and because of that we can walk to our own beat. So lose yourself in lyrics, let the beats of your heart coincide with the bass, and let the music flow through you and put your mind at ease.
