This article is called "Why Milo Yiannopoulos Is Important," not "Why Milo Yiannopoulos Is Right" or "We Should All Be Like Milo Yiannopoulos," because we shouldn't.
I wanted to cover Milo because he is an important speaker. I do not agree with his views, and I do not promote them, but I do believe that he should be listened to; he must be understood.
Here is the man in question:
Milo is 32 years old. He is gay, liberal (culturally), and conservative (social-politically). He is an editor for Breitbart Tech. He has a big ego.
Milo is the super-villain of today's online journalism and public speaking.
He covers such topics as:
Social network censorship - which he is actively against. His twitter account has been de-verified but is still his.
Student protests - which he often encounters. He is not against student protests but also believes that the fact that someone is protesting does not mean they are right.
Progressivism and Social Justice Movements - Milo is against them for the reason of his being a defender of freedom of speech. He is one of the users of the term "Regressive Left".
He covered the GamerGate controversy (I cannot link to the wiki page, as it is extremely biased).
He hates feminism - he believes that the modern (2000) feminist movement is about men-hating. He believes that men are being abused in the media.
He believes that the wage-gap is a myth - he actually does a lot of math about it. Here is some math on the subject by Sargon Of Akkad which is quite specific and easy to follow.
He has been banned from many universities, and been protested against.
He also has been well received at many universities. Here is an article by a student from Bucknell University (A private liberal arts college in Pennsylvania) where Milo gave a speech (This student is President of the Class of 2017 at Bucknell University).
Milo is an important public speaker because he constantly challenges ideas that many see as axiomatic. Listening to him can help you understand your own ideas, help you build your own arguments. It is part of personal growth - to question yourself and your beliefs.
