What would you do if you came home one day and discovered that you were pregnant despite being a virgin? You would probably freak out! This is basically the storyline for the TV show "Jane the Virgin" that comes on the CW. In the show, the main character Jane Villanueva becomes accidentally artificially inseminated by a female doctor during an appointment. I know what you're thinking...sounds crazy and ridiculous right?
Jane comes from a Hispanic family with a very strong Catholic background. She lives with her mother Xiomara, who had Jane at 16, and grandmother Alba, who is one hundred percent against premarital sex. When Alba discovers that Jane is "pregnant," she flips out of course!. When Jane was a little girl, she made a promise to Alba that she will not have sex before marriage. Alba gave her a white flower and a representation of the gift of virginity sex. If a petal falls from the flower, the flower can never be perfect again. If Jane were to lose her virginity, she could NEVER get it back.
Things have been hard for Jane because she's engaged to her boyfriend of two years, Michael. Her grandmother's words always haunt her when Jane gets into "steamy" situations, and she pictures the petals falling from the flower. It is important to note that Jane that is in her early 20s. She struggles to find a balance between her engagement, school, her job as a waitress, and now a very unexpected pregnancy. To add to the mix of things, she just recently discovered that her father who's been absent for the majority of her life is a famous telenovela star who she sees on TV everyday! Can she keep it all together? Will she keep the baby? Will she keep her virginity before marriage?
If all of this seems interesting to you, check out "Jane the Virgin" and see what you think!I love the show because it touches on a variety of subjects: love, redemption, immigration, motherhood, school, and even crime (hint, hint). I can't reveal too many details because I don't want to reveal any spoiler alerts, and remember...
