Why I Love Being A Woman In Communications

Being an extrovert, I’ve always loved to talk. I was frequently told by others that I should consider a communications major once college came around, and I was a little skeptical at first, because I had no idea what being a communications major consisted of, what the job market was like, and if I would even end up liking it. Despite all of my doubts, I listened to those around me and ended up choosing a major within the communications field. As a first year student, I was encouraged by upperclassmen and professors to get involved with student organizations that interested me, and upon exploring the different options that Ithaca College has, I came across a student organization named IC Women in Communications. Joining this organization has not only helped me sharpen my professional skills, it has also shown me that there are so many reasons why being a woman in the communications field is pretty awesome, and although the reasons are endless, here are some of my favorites.

The ability to connect with other women in the field.

Not every college or university has an organization specifically dedicated to women within the communications field, and that’s perfectly okay. There are other ways to connect with women in the communications field, and once you do, it’s an entirely new experience. Connecting with other women is a great way to broaden your knowledge and gain new perspectives about what it’s like to be a woman involved in the industry, and connecting with other women has helped me become more confident as a woman within the field.

The endless network of incredible women.

Once you’ve connected with other women in the field, you’ll realize that there is a whole network of passionate women out there that are more than willing to help and guide you, and that’s pretty amazing. Surrounding yourself with other motivated women can be an extremely empowering and rewarding experience, and it is one of my favorite parts. There are mentorship programs, conferences, professional development organizations, etc. completely dedicated to helping you connect with other women, so don’t be afraid to look for them. New York Women in Communications is an excellent resource for helping you do so.

The resources.

As a student, I am constantly looking for ways to further my professional development and prepare myself for the professional world. I love hearing advice from those who have experience within the communications field, and especially women within the field. Hearing stories of another woman’s experiences and achievements is a great way to connect with them on a more personal level, and there are a ton of resources available to allow you to do so.

And finally…

The success of other women within the industry.

Each day there are more and more stories of women doing amazing things within the communications industry. Hearing about their successes gives me hope that I will someday be as successful as them, and it makes me happy to know that there are women out there kicking butt within the industry.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
