Why I Love Being A Hufflepuff

It's not about being brave or smart or cunning. Its about being loyal above all else.

“You might belong in Hufflepuff,

Where they are just and loyal,

Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,

And unafraid of toil.”

-J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone

I am a Hufflepuff. To most people, this would be a letdown.

From the first book, we are taught by the other characters that being a Hufflepuff is equivalent to social suicide; we are taught that Hufflepuff's are those who aren’t brave enough, smart enough, or cunning enough for the other houses.

But most of us who are Hufflepuff understand that it is not that we aren’t brave or smart or cunning, it is about how we can possess all of those traits and still choose to be loyal to those who have stood by us.

I love being a Hufflepuff. There are a lot of reasons why.

1. It's about loyalty and friendship

Loyalty to those who are loyal to us is a founding principle to Hufflepuff. We have a very strong sense of protecting what's ours and our own, and while having this doesn’t automatically make you a Hufflepuff, not having it will most certainly rule you out.

2. No one “pretends” to be a Hufflepuff

We all have that friend who will swear that they are a Gryffindor or a Slytherin, even if they’re actually not. But, because of that predisposed bias against Hufflepuff, most people won't say that they’re in Hufflepuff if they’re not. And, while there is nothing wrong with feeling more connected to a house that you aren’t “apart of” in Hufflepuff, most people are there because that is where they were sorted.

3. Have you seen Nymphadora Tonks?

Sure, the other house have notable members, but none have Nymphadora Tonks. We are the only house with a confirmed metamorphmagus. But, besides that, she is just an all around amazing woman. She is a rebel and Auror who is probably one of the bravest and smartest characters in the series. Sure, J.K. Rowling could have put her into Gryffindor, but it is her kindness that makes her a Hufflepuff. It is her willingness to be a steady and solid support system for those that she loves that sets her aside from all of the other characters.

And not only is she a member of our great house but so is her son and fellow metamorphmagus, Teddy Lupin.

4. Everyone always Underestimates a badger

Everyone assumes that because you’re a Hufflepuff, you’re weak. But, that is simply not the truth. With many strong-willed characters having passed through our house, you would think that people would have learned that you should never underestimate a badger. But hey, no one will ever see us coming.

So, this, of course, isn’t all of the reasons that I’m proud to be a Hufflepuff, but that list would be crazy long.

The point is, I love being a Hufflepuff, and so do a lot of other people.

Being a hufflepuff is part of what makes me who I am, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
