Ugh, Odyssey. Isn’t it just the worst? Writing and reading, and those articles are always are on your Facebook newsfeed. Gosh, it's just too much. Too many relatable articles, too many people you know writing those them. Joining Odyssey is the straight up worst, and here’s why.
You can write what you want to write about. Who wants all of those choices?
I’ve written everything from articles detailing where the student body gets freaky to crazy sorority girl scandals. That’s a lot of pressure to come up with something. You have to think up article ideas all the time. There are too many opportunities to express your opinion or inform the student body about something. Who would want the freedom to write about what they are already talking about? Who wouldn’t want someone telling you want you can and can’t write? Ridiculous. Too much.
You meet people in other on-campus organizations... No thanks.
Just another reason to make it the worst, you get to socialize with people, people outside of your sorority or fraternity. As if you want to be Panhellenic or IFC friendly. As if you want to make connections to the whole of the Greek community. As if you want to relate to the whole UIUC campus. How dumb is that? Those other people on staff could be in your classes or other RSOs, too. No thanks, I’d rather not make friends with people.
You get campus - or nationally- famous. That's just too much responsibility.
There is way to much responsibility with this one. Who could handle all of the pressure of having your friends, classmates and even strangers read what you have to say? Nope. Having people come up to you in class or while you’re out and complimenting you on your articles? No thanks, I'd rather not. Campus fame is not something I’m looking for. You could even end up like Mackenzie Pearson from Odyssey staff at Clemson University and make the mistake of writing an article that goes so viral that you end up on Good Morning America. Doesn’t that just sound awful?
Now, obviously, I’m being facetious. Those reasons don’t even scratch the surface of why I love Odyssey so much. If you’re interested in joining the ranks of writers at around 215+ different campuses across the country, writing about what you want, working with your peers in the community and getting some fan mail like I do, you can apply to be a part of Odyssey family here!
