Everyone always asks you–especially if you're a college student–what you want to do with your life. We've all heard this question over and over again at countless family gatherings, dinners, and at holidays. It always seems like the first thing that someone asks you during this period in your life is, "What's your plan?" or, "What kind of career do you want to have?" Now if you're like me, you will almost automatically spiral into a bit of an existential crisis and question everything that you've ever known because frankly, you have no idea what the answer is to that question. Or even if you do, you don't necessarily know if it's actually going to happen.
What I've learned over the years, and especially through part of my time at college, is that it's really just not worth it to stress over what's to come. For instance, you have a job interview next week, and you're already nervous because you don't know what to expect. You start putting your body through unnecessary stress just because you're scared of the "unknown." In a situation like this, it's completely normal to be worrisome and nervous, and I'm not disregarding that. However, it's a useless worry on your mind that you really don't need to focus your energy on. It's not fair to yourself. Treat yourself better by just preparing yourself for what you can, and letting the rest fall into place. There's no sense in worrying over something that you can't control.
For college students, I know from experience that it's dangerously easy to fall into a pit of worry when it comes to your future: a job, money, where you'll live, bills, finding love, and having a family. It's good to think about your future and try to have a plan of some sort... to a certain extent. If you find yourself actually stressing over itty-bitty details that don't even exist yet, it's time to take a step back. The reason I say this is because while you're focusing so hard on the future, you're missing out on the here and now. You can easily take yourself out of the moment and try to live in the future, meanwhile, time is fleeting! Like I said earlier with the job example, there's only so much that you can do when it comes to future events. Just prepare what you can without driving yourself crazy over it, and remember to hit pause on this very moment.
Life is just a giant series of moments anyway, so why waste even a single moment worrying about another moment that has yet to even happen? Work hard, reward yourself, and have faith that you will find a way–because after all, when there's a will, there's a way. And until you find that way, don't waste your days worrying about when/where/how/why that way will come. But when that way does make an appearance, take it!
