It’s become a popular trend for girls these past couple years to label themselves as a “psychotic” or “bipolar” girlfriend, thinking that it’s cute and shows their boyfriends how much they care about them. This is not the case.
When you start this self-diagnosing behavior, it downgrades individuals who actually struggle with these issues and normalizes abusive tendencies. A video that went viral early this year depicts a girl holding a knife to her crying boyfriends throat and forcing him to tell the girls watching the video to stop commenting on her boyfriend’s pictures and that they are in love. Now, if a male did this to a female we would want him locked up right? We would warn the girl that he could potentially become dangerous and harm her. But because the psychotic girlfriend persona is so openly accepted, no one blinks before they share it and think “this is totally me”. Believe it or not your significant other cannot control who comments on his Instagram or profile pictures so it’s not healthy to get THAT upset over it. Another meme that recently went viral had a quote saying “You let your boyfriends have female friends? I barely let mine have a sister.” This is also a completely unhealthy mindset. Not allowing your boyfriend have any female friends at all can be seen as an abusive behavior. Now I know some females have ulterior motives and that you wouldn’t want them around those specific people, but to cut them off completely from the opposite sex is very unnecessary. If a relationship doesn’t have trust it won’t function. If you’re so invested in making sure your boyfriend isn’t cheating on you then you might not be in the right relationship. Even the videos that show a person sneakily checking their boyfriend/girlfriends phone while they’re in the bathroom aren’t healthy. You’ve got to remember until you’re engaged or married and even when you are, that person is not your property. You should not have to sneakily try 10 different passwords while they’re in the bathroom to see if they’re texting another female. If you have a suspicion, then ASK. When you’re so invested in what your boyfriend or girlfriend is doing you lose a part of yourself. Instead of hacking your boyfriend’s Instagram to see what girl’s pictures he’s liked do something for yourself. Invest in building up your own confidence so you won’t care if you catch your boyfriend cheating on you. At that point, it’s his on loss and you’ll be able to dump him and move on with your life. We are so much more than that “Crazy” label, so let’s act like it.
