One of my best friends on snap chat is my younger brother's girlfriend. We text on a pretty normal basis. Over fall break, she came over to our house to hang out with me.
My brother has been with his girlfriend for a little over a year now. They started dating when I was abroad in London last year. I'll admit, when I first heard about her, I looked her up on all forms of social media. You can call it low-key stalking if you want, but I'm a big sister in the twenty-first century, so make your own conclusions.
I didn't get to meet Leah until two months into their relationship when I got back home from my semester abroad. At first, I was a little hesitant and weary of her. He is my little brother, after all. I, of course, didn't let it show when I met her face-to-face, however.
Over Christmas break, Leah was over all the time, so I was able to get a good read on her. I was able to witness how happy she made my brother. I was able to witness her caring and funny personality.
Ok, I thought, she passes. And if you think this "girlfriend approval process" sounds a little harsh, well, you're not wrong. I wasn't about to have some chick I didn't know (or didn't like) dating Jack.
What truly led me and Leah to be friends is her ability to poke fun at Jack. Don't get me wrong, she's extremely nice and caring, but can crack jokes with me too, like showing me embarrassing snap chats he takes.
Another bonus point for Leah? She thinks my mom and I are cool. Which, I mean, why wouldn't she? Maybe Jack will start to realize this now too. She sometimes even backs my mom and I up when we ask Jack a question or to do something and he doesn't answer.
I try not to take this sister-girlfriend relationship for granted. I know this isn't usually how things work out. It's probably because of a combination of our fun personalities. But seriously, it makes things so much easier on everyone when you like the person your brother, sister, friend or whoever is dating ... especially when she's over your house all the time.
