Spring break is finally here, after seven long and tiring weeks of the seemingly never-ending second semester. And while you might already be enjoying the beach, I’m probably enjoying the cold of my home and scrolling through everyone’s Panama City and South Padre Island pictures. And while I could be upset that I’m not enjoying the sun and drinks like everyone else, I’m simply not. Because going home for spring break is just as good, if not better, than going south for the season.
It might be my out-of-state bias, but there’s nothing I love more than getting to go home. I can take a shower for as long as I want with as much hot water as I want. I have a fully stocked kitchen as my disposal. I can sleep in my own bed without another person a few feet away from me. It’s a glorious time to be in your own home.
And while you might get a little jealous of all the partying your classmates and sorority sisters are doing on the beach, you know you can have just as much fun hanging out with your mom. There are just as few worries in your cul-de-sac as there are on the beach.
Plus, if you’re lucky enough to have the same spring break, then you get to see all the people you leave behind for nine months of the year. Your summer might be filled with study abroad, or summer classes, or internships, and spring break might be your last chance this year to just relax. You have no classes to worry about and you can focus on visiting all your old high schools haunts or driving around aimlessly just for something to do.
Spring break trips also tend to require a lot of planning and budgeting. I prefer to hit up my favorite restaurant at home than live off granola bars and pb&j’s for a week while sitting in a crowded beach and counting down the hours 'til the parties begin.
I can admit to being a little jealous of the weather and wishing I was near the ocean and soaking in the sun, but I also do really love going home for spring break and seeing my family. If you’re anything like me and are unwillingly but slowly counting down the days left where you can just lay around and not have any responsibilities, then you know you need to take every chance you get to be lazy.
As we loom closer and closer to being real adults, I try to soak in any and every opportunity to just be at home and be carefree before I have to start thinking about getting a job and becoming an active adult. Partying in Florida is fun, but you can do that here. I’m still trying to take all my available chances at being a kid before I have to start thinking about things like taxes over if I can get my mom to bring me McDonald’s so I don’t have to get up.
