I didn't start my college career at Texas State, but I got here as fast as I could. I am proud to call myself a Texas State student, and I truly believe Texas State is one of the best places to receive a college education. Unfortunately, not everyone views Texas State the same way. Somewhere along the way, Texas State received the reputation of a party school, and that is what it became known for. Despite the negative reputation and media coverage Texas State receives, I love getting to call myself a Texas State student. I could name 100 reasons why I love attending Texas State, but here are my top four.
Academics
Obviously, the main goal of going to college is to receive a good education, and Texas State provides that opportunity. Students from our business school win national competitions and get to compete worldwide, our College of Education is one of the biggest in Texas, and our theatre program is one of the best in the country. You may not have to be in the top 10 percent of your high school class to get admitted to Texas State, but our programs are still some of the greatest.
Location
San Marcos is the perfect place for 18 year olds who are leaving home for the first time. It's not too big, not too small, and pretty easy to get around. It has a small town feel, but has everything you need. San Marcos is also right in between Austin and San Antonio, so there is always plenty to do. It is in a prime location. Also, did I mention that we have a river? The sheer beauty of our campus and town will convince anyone to attend Texas State.
Faculty
Our faculty is made up of some of the best educators around. Most of my professors have prior experience working in the field they are teaching. I have learned so much more from their stories and advice than could never be learned from reading a textbook. You can’t put a price on knowledge like that. They are approachable and truly care about the success of their students. Professors at Texas State view us as individuals, not just another number.
Students
My friends, classmates, and peers are some of the best people I have ever met. Texas State is not made up of a bunch of partiers, but a bunch of down-to-earth, big-hearted people. Students are always smiling and in a good mood, but then again, how could you not be when you attend one of the greatest universities in Texas? Everyone is always willing to drop everything to help someone in need, or give up their time to serve the community.
Hopefully, one day Texas State will lose its negative reputation but even if it doesn’t, I am, and always will be, proud to be a Bobcat.
