During the summer, a lot of the focus is on people and their bodies. Recently, the world has been inspired to empower women of all shapes and sizes, but what about us pale girls? Here's to all the girls like me that don't tan as well as the rest.
First of all, your lack of color does not define your worth, during the summer or otherwise. Yeah, I was born a little whiter than everyone else. And that's okay. Sometimes seeing tanner girls can make us feel a little bit sorry for ourselves. What's to feel sorry about? Pale skin used to be the epitome of beauty!
There seem to be a list of colors that you're not allowed to wear if you're "too pale". It's crazy how society acts like being paler than average means you're unhealthy or have some sort of problem. Wear black and red unapologetically and show the world how well you can pull it off.
Don't be ashamed to wear the short shorts just because your legs are whiter than the North Pole in the winter! Wear the tank top and the flip flops. Show off that beautiful porcelain skin that was envied so many years ago. Also, if you happen to bend over a flash a bit of skin; don't think twice about it being blinding to those people. They didn't need to be looking anyways.
Then again, there's the sunburn. SPF 3000 couldn't stop the UV rays from penetrating the helplessness that is pale skin. Every time we get burnt it never tans, and it always peels in the worst spots. Thankfully, we live in a world with Aloe Vera and air conditioning. No need to go outside! There's probably something better on Netflix anyways. (Have you started One Tree Hill yet?
You can pretty much kiss the wish of a natural fake glow away as well. There have seldom been any spray tans that haven't turned out like you were trying out for an Oompa-Loompa look-alike contest, and even if you master the color there is always one area that makes it completely obvious that it's fake. The clear giveaway is usually the hands or other extremely dry areas of the body. However, if you're stuck on the choice between UV tanning and spray, definitely choose the fake. Keep yourself healthy before risking skin cancer.
The acceptance of others is overrated. I believe in the power of positive thinking, so just be happy in your own skin (literally). So here's the thing, girls. We're pale. But we're pale and proud. Keep that in mind the next time the sun reflects off your skin and blinds a few strangers. There's nothing to be ashamed of! Keep your head up, and your skin white!
