Earlier this week, the official Trailer for Star Wars the Force Awakens was released and everyone lost their minds. Full disclosure, am a huge Star Wars fan, and have been since I watched the original trilogy on a family road trip so many years ago.
My love for Star Wars was tested when the pre-quels were released, mainly because I hated Hayden Ch and it made me in turn hate Darth Vader for being a whiny, and not the evil badass we saw in the original trilogy, but that's neither here nor there.
But, if my instincts are correct, the new JJ Abrams led project should re-ignite my love for that galaxy far, far away once again. And it is not just a new story that excites me, there is a presentation aspect that I am really looking forward to. JJ Abrams is the man who rebooted the Star Trek franchise with huge success, and Disney, who recently bought the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas, have asked him to reboot yet another sci-fi empire.
The reason I say a presentation aspect is something that excites me is that during the prequels, Lucas became obsessed with the green screen, and the worlds the viewer saw were no longer believable. But in Abrams's Star Trek movies, the viewer allows themselves to believe they on the Enterprise. With his use of sets and a proper use of digital effects, he should be able to give the Star Wars faithful a more believable and realistic universe.
Now from a story telling point of view the story looks like it takes place 30 years after the events of The Return Of the Jedi. With the return of fan favorites like Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia, they are joined by newcomers Kylo Ren the new villain, a girl named Rey who is suspected to be the daughter of Han Solo and Leia, and a former stormtrooper named Finn. He doesn't look like a clone of Jango Fett, but I guess that is not important right now, what is important is where is Luke Skywalker?
Where is the Hero of the original trilogy? The one that defeated Vader and The Emperor and brought balance to the force? There is a scene where Rey asks Solo if the stories of The Jedi and Dark side were true, and Solo has to tell her that they were true, so what is the force's role in the post-Empire galaxy? Why hasn't Luke done what he said he'd do and rebuild the Jedi Order?
There is also a scene where R2D2 is being touched by a man with a metal-looking hand, and ole Lucas Skywalker fits that description pretty well, so we at least know we will see him at one point.
The trailer portrays a story of conflict between whatever the rebel alliance has turned into, and a entity that shares a distinct similarity with the Galactic Empire/Sith. We see Finn holding a lightsaber fighting Kylo Ren and we see X-wing Fighters fighting Tie Fighters in the Classic Star Wars Dog Fights we have come to love.
We now see whole new worlds littered with the wreckage of the imperial Star Destroyer. Yes, I am nerding out over the thought that this movie and the presumed ones that will follow it will make up for the lackluster prequels and lack of Star Wars since.
I have no doubt in my mind that I will like this movie, and here is why. This story is just fascinating to me, the power struggle saga set in a long time ago, but somehow in a futuristic setting with cool characters like Han Solo. They also bring back classic hero characters like Luke Skywalker, and all work together to beat this dangerous evil entity to bring peace to this massive galaxy.
I will love this movie because like a lot of people, I just love Star Wars, and I hope that love I felt for it a long time ago is justified with a new saga to obsesses over.
I have faith in JJ Abrams and Disney to do a god job with this staple of American Culture, but in case they need some help, all I would like to say is, May the Force be with you.
Check out the trailer for yourself & nerd out with me!
